Harness/Engine interchange help needed
I bought a 98' dropout from Tim @ EADperformance a couple of months ago. I am now just starting on the wiring. It was odd because when I laid the harness in some connectors wouldn't plug in like the coolant temp sensor and I would have random plugs. The CTS has a 2 pin plug with a 3 pin sensor I would imagine the other pin is for gauge readout. So in futher study I looked up the pin out of the PCMs for year 98 and 99 in the LS1 swap FAQ, lo' and behold I have a 98 engine, with a 99 harness. Is there a way I can figure out what year PCM I have and is there a way to make the harness work or is it impossible? I understand I may be able to get it to work but I don't want to spend hundreds on sensors and connectors when not needed if I can simply trade a harness. I doubt Tim will trade me or give me a refund because I bought it 4 months ago and I believe he doesn't even work for EAD anymore. Thanks for your help everybody!

Your best bet would be to change all the sensors on the block to the '99-up style. I'm not sure what sensors are different, I think only a few of them are (coolant tem, and knock sensors for sure). If the VIN number is on the ecu the 10th digit is the year. x=99, y=00, 1=01, 2=02.

Thanks! This is great... I have a 98 engine, a 99-00 harness because there is the red EGR control wire eliminating the possibility of it being a 01-02 harness. I also have a 02 PCM according to your 10th digit equation. Is it the set of numbers that have asterisk by them? On my PCM it exactly says *86CJHLM07272Q9HS*. If my PCM were a 98 I would just go buy a harness, but since I have a 02 PCM and a 99-00 harness I guess my best bet is to use 99+ sensors. has anyone done this or know exactly what sensors to switch over? This pisses me off I knew everything was going too smooth...

Yea, just use the 99+ sensors. And I think, and I stress THINK, you can just have the dealership flash your ecu for a 99-00 VIN. I'm pretty sure all the ECU's are the same from 99-02, just different program. The number you posted is not the VIN. Probably just some factory control number. The VIN should be something like 2G1FP22G*********. 8th digit is engine code, G=ls1.

I hope I don't have to spend a **** load on just sensors... Those are the only set of numbers on the PCM itself that have more than 10 digits. I'll call my local autoparts store (guys who know what they're doing) and see if they can find out what year its for. I have no idea what the VIN is of what any of this stuff came from. I looked over the 98 pin out and its TOTALLY different from the 99-02 harness. Once I figure out what year PCM I have i'll figure out what to do. If it just so happens that its a 98 PCM I'll keep all of it and get a 98 harness because it may be cheper and less of a hassle. Thanks alot you answered all of my questions!

Yeah it does but its my fault for not checking right when I bought it. I was new to the LS1, recieving the wrong harness didnt even cross my mind. Lesson learned. I can find a harness on car-part for 150 maybe I should just opt for that. Off topic, your car is coming out great!

C5 and F-body harness are different. You might want to consider keeping the harness you have and getting a newer PCM. The newer stuff has more tuning suport and almost everyone uses them so there is a lot more knowledge floating around for them. The PCM is also physically smaller so it is easier to hide.

you sould do a little research and find out what vehicle you pcm came out of then go to your local library and find the michell elecrical manual that covers it and look at the engine performance wiring diagram and it will show you the pcm pins and where they go. you can also just buy the connectors to fit the sensor rather then changing the sensor to save a little coin.

I am sure its a 98 PCM and 99 harness, I've already checked with the Swap FAQs and brought the PCM to the parts store to have it checked for the year. I am going to buy a 98 harness. I won't need a PCM ad won't have to change sensors... It'll just be easier.

Look!! You are bidding on a C5 Corvette LS1 engine wiring harness complete. This harness came off a 97 automatic transmission car and includes all plugs and ground wires for sensors, injectors, computer and etc. Thanks for looking and happy bidding!!!
The harness is out in the garage, but the pic shows the ECM plugs appearing to be 2 long (double) connectors, a blue and a red. If you can use it, make me an offer. I gave $154.49 plus shipping for it...
