Default What sizes are the actual LS1 starter bolts?

Such simple info seems hard to find. Anyone know?

Thanks!

I don't have the size but as I remember they are special bolts designed to position the starter correctly. I don't think you would want to use a standard bolt even if it was the same diameter, length and thread pitch. If the starter is just a little out of alignment you could wreck the ring gear and that is a major PITA. I don't guarantee this info. but I think it is correct.

This raises an interesting question. Is there a proper way to align the starter? Mine is hanging up for a few seconds after the motor starts, makes a terrible racket. Advice appreciated.

you cant really shim them.. they bolt in differently from a SBC.. i loosened mine up, clicked the bendix a few times, pushed it toward the crank, and torqued it down, and it aligned better.
I'd Definately use GM bolts.. they're unique.

Schtzo,

If I don't forget by the time I get home from the office, I will measure them for you. The inside one is shorter than the outside one. They are special only that they have a knurl near the thread for what I presume is meant to take up any clearance between it and the hole in the starter body (for a close fit). Buy the GM part.

I bought a summit hi torque starter and it has standard type metric bolts included in the kit. And guess what else?.....Shims with instructions on how to set the proper ring gear clearance just like a GEN I. So why would an aftermarket starter require the shims, when the stock starter is mounted without them? BTW, the clearance the instructions specify is .025" - .060", or they say you can use a large paperclip (that measures .040").

Andy,

What is the clearance between, where do you measure? Any chance you could scan the instuctions and post them?

thanks

Hi,

This is from the LS1 engine kit installation guide that I would recommend everyone get before a swap.

Starter - P/N-10465385

Bolt inner - P/N- 12561848

Bolt Outer - P/N- 12561387

OOH ! they've got them in the "help" section in autozone... they're "metric GM starter bolts"... they've got the knurling.

Pat,

Scanner was not available, but instructions illustrate the clearance when using the appropriate size pin at the root of the ring gear with the pinion manually engaged. I'm not sure how you could manually engage the stock starter's pinion. Anyway, each .016" shim increases the clearance .0075"; two shims are provided with my starter. If you need to decrease the clearance, use a half shim under the outside bolt only....seems pretty Mickey Mouse to me, but that's what they say. Hope this helps.
