Starter Question
During that switch I took all the started cables off. Could it be possible that I wired it backwards. I put the ground on the side that has the steel cable coming off of it. And Im using the ls1 factory + cable from the battery to the starter.
Anyone have anyideas. I doubt I fried the starter. The solenoid will click but not turn over the starter. Anyone have a clue as to what could be the culpret.
Thanks
Dan.
Now the starter will click once when 12v is applied. Rather then clitch non stop. It like the starter gear will click into place but not turn over the motor.
I will note that the battery wire will get very hot however the wire going to the starter will not. And the ground from the battery to the block will also get hot and smoke.
But I dont understand why the battery cables will heat up to the point where they will start smoking. This only happens when engauging the starter.
how do you have the entire engine grounded?
The starter is grounded to the motor at the attachment point. You should add a ground wire from engine block to the body( like the firewall) and from the engine block to the chassis. you can add another from the body to the chassis. Make the grounds as short as possible and the connections as tight as possible.
for the power side, ensure the the cable from the positive side of the Batt to the starter is not old because it could be broken and not deliver enough current. Ensure the connection at the starter is tight to.
If you can, get somebody to turn the key while you measure the voltage at the starter during cranking. Then measure the voltage at the batt and see if there is a substancial amount of voltage drop
If all that is ok on your car, you take the starter to an auto store and get it tested.
post up if you are able to fix the problem
Battery is grounded to the chassis and the block.
There is a Braided line going from the firewall to the back of the block.
Those are my grounds. I also aded a few more grounds with 2 sets of jumper cables going from the battery to the block and the battery + to the starter. And also another jumper from the starter on the -side to the battery.

Last week I hooked up a ground to that side but but never put a nut on the terminal to hold the ground down. So when I tested the starter it turned over the motor.
So last night when I tried to start it with everything tightned down it didn't work.
