Default Starter Question

I tried starting my ls1 notch today and the starter will click when 12 v hits the starter solenoid. But thats all it will do. It will click and not turn over the motor. Last week It would turn the motor over. I have since done some wiring on the car and have changed the ground on the starter from a 4ft cable to the headerbolt, to a 1ft cable that goes directly to the side of the block.

During that switch I took all the started cables off. Could it be possible that I wired it backwards. I put the ground on the side that has the steel cable coming off of it. And Im using the ls1 factory + cable from the battery to the starter.

Anyone have anyideas. I doubt I fried the starter. The solenoid will click but not turn over the starter. Anyone have a clue as to what could be the culpret.

Thanks
Dan.

have you checked the battery voltage?

The old battery wouldn't hold a charge so I just went and got a new one.

Now the starter will click once when 12v is applied. Rather then clitch non stop. It like the starter gear will click into place but not turn over the motor.

I will note that the battery wire will get very hot however the wire going to the starter will not. And the ground from the battery to the block will also get hot and smoke.

Battery voltage is good. Fuel pump will now prime and hold pressure. The old battery couldn't even keep the fuel pump running and that was after a full 24 hours on the charger.

But I dont understand why the battery cables will heat up to the point where they will start smoking. This only happens when engauging the starter.

Just put jumper cables frmo the block to the chassis. From the starter to the chassis. From the battery + to the starter + side. Nothing it turning this thing over. I even tried jumping the car with the new battery and a running car and still the same thing.

sounds like there is too much resistance on your starting circuit hence the cables get hot.....

how do you have the entire engine grounded?

The starter is grounded to the motor at the attachment point. You should add a ground wire from engine block to the body( like the firewall) and from the engine block to the chassis. you can add another from the body to the chassis. Make the grounds as short as possible and the connections as tight as possible.

for the power side, ensure the the cable from the positive side of the Batt to the starter is not old because it could be broken and not deliver enough current. Ensure the connection at the starter is tight to.

If you can, get somebody to turn the key while you measure the voltage at the starter during cranking. Then measure the voltage at the batt and see if there is a substancial amount of voltage drop

If all that is ok on your car, you take the starter to an auto store and get it tested.

post up if you are able to fix the problem

Starter is grounded to the block.
Battery is grounded to the chassis and the block.
There is a Braided line going from the firewall to the back of the block.

Those are my grounds. I also aded a few more grounds with 2 sets of jumper cables going from the battery to the block and the battery + to the starter. And also another jumper from the starter on the -side to the battery.

Just out of curiousity...how did you take the ground off the starter??? Did you have a separate wire grounding it somehow? Just curious.

That makes sense. Electricity will follow the path of least resistance, which would be through that ground wire instead of through the starter. And since it was essentially shorted direct to ground it would get quite hot as you stated. Out of curiosity, where did you connect that extra ground wire on the starter? Guess we can add that to the list of things not to do! LOL.

From the ground side on the starter where the steel strap is. To the side of the block. I used one of the unused motor mount holes.

Last week I hooked up a ground to that side but but never put a nut on the terminal to hold the ground down. So when I tested the starter it turned over the motor.

So last night when I tried to start it with everything tightned down it didn't work.
