I have taken the EGR off my LS6 engine. When I capped off the hole in the manifold the engine started throwing out brown/black smoke, which I assume was because it was running in full rich mode.

Opened the hole in the manifold and the engine ran clean again.

Is this normal, or is there something else I need to be looking at?

Paul, wasn't it the EVAP system that you capped off?

The LS6's never had EGR. Not exactly sure what you are removing.

Paul,

Have you got a picture of what you removed? - either way, a hole to atmosphere in the inlet manifold would be a baaaad thing! (unless it's known as the TB of course).

the EGR is the tube goin from the passenger exhaust mani to the intake mani just behind the TB, just to clarify.

When i removed my EGR, it didn't affect my car at all as far as how it ran.

I left the EVAP valve in place and disconnected the hose. Pretty much the same as removing the whole thing and plugging the hole. No smoke here. So I would say something else is wrong.

go open your fuel tank cap, then restart the car with the line disconnected and intake capped.

Might be worth removing the PCV and plugging that hole then re-try (Evap hole plugged). You may be sucking oil into the intake and burning that?

Just a thought

Does anyone think the problem could be caused by a faulty fuel pressure regulator. I have got a gauge on the regulator, and if it is correct I have too much pressure. I have tried adjusting it to reduce the pressure, but the gauge still indicates too much pressure.

After a minute or so on tick over, the fuel pump starts working harder until the fuel pressure drops to 58 psi and at the same time the engine cuts out.

I presume that if the gauge is correct the engine could be running too much fuel, hence the smoke. Unplugging the evap hole may be allowing more air in and allowing the engine to run leaner.

Just a theory, but does it make any sense?

When I had mine checked at GD, the 58psi was set for the moment the system is pressurised when the key is first turned (i.e. before engine start). Don't know how the pressure varies whilst the engine is running...

Paul,

Does sound as if the regulator could be suspect. Might also be worth removing the filler cap to remove any chance of a blocked fuel tank breather causing the problem. Or maybe a hose collapsing therby causing loss of fuel (hence speeding up the pump) - straw clutching maybe?

Why do we add the extra regulator - what would happen if the pump was connected directly to the fuel rail - could it cope with the back pressure from the engine regulator?

the fuel pump would burn up. The fuel has to go somewhere.. if its deadlocked, the pump will have problems. What do you mean by "second" regulator?

97 and 98 corvettes had the regulator on the fuel rail. With these, you don't need the regulator near the pump.

98-02 F-bodies and 99+ vettes don't have the regulator on the rail and you have to use a different regulator, a lot of guys use the 99-03 Corvette regulator.
