Default 4th gen fuel sender ohm conversion question

Since the 4th gen fuel tank sender uses 33-270 ohms (according to a post here) and the 3rd gen fuel sender does 0-90, has anyone modified their 4th gen sender so that it will output 0-90 ohms to be used with the original 3rd gen gauges? I'm thinking I will have to somehow modify the sender unit somehow with a different resistor, but I haven't taken one apart yet so I'm not sure what's inside. Any ideas?

A long time ago I saw someone post that they had disassembeled the sender and put in a 100ohm wire wound resistor from radioshack. But I cannot find the post anymore.

Who designed the 4th gen sender? This is a long shot, but maybe we could get ahold of the guy and see what he can tell us about it.

how about removing the ohm rheostat thing that has the level on it (on the sending unit), and replacing it with one taken from a 3rd gen? a little solder would make it work.

Well I'm getting close to that point. I have complete third and fourth gen tanks sitting in the shop and barring any electrical solution that may be the route I take.

To be honest I was hoping to find a thread somewhere that said "put resistor such and such here and your all set" with pics of course

if only that was the case.. It's your duty, once you've got it done, to post pics and detailed instructions.

what about using the 3rd gen sendning unit, it goes right in.
another idea would be to use a v6 sendor out of a 98-02 car. im pretty sure they are std 0-90 ohm, but dont quote me.

I think he's right.. V6 people have to use the V8 guage cluster when they do an LS1 swap, otherwise the tank only reads half.

Yeah well if i go that route i indeed will post up the fix.

As for the six banger sending uni that sounds interesting. I'll keep searching and hopefully someone will chime in who knows the actual ohm sweep of the 6cyl unit

I have the opposite problem. I have the 3rd gen tank and need my 99 PCM and gauges to read the sender from the 3rd gen tank.

I suppose I could convert to the 4th gen tank, I dont want to change my fuel system and lines.

I just did quote you. Cuz your RIGHT! Thanks for the tip man. I bought a new delco v6 sender at a flea market for 2 bucks no idea what year but i did recognize it looked the same as the LS1 unit aside from being white. As luck would have it I measured in and its 90 ohm ( well my meter measured 80 but so did the stock third gen one so crap *** meter )

It fit right on the LS1 sender

Check issue 46 off my list of 338

SO let me get this right.... Put in a V6 sending unit into the LS1 fuel tank and BOOM!!! The third gen gauge works like a charm??? If this is SO, THEN IT MUST BE DONE!!!

All I can say with certainty so far is the ohm sweep is the same from the stock third gen and the v6 sender I used. I bought the sender at a flea market from a Delco parts man out of packagebut he didnt know the year it was out of so I dont have a part number.

I havent turned it on yet as the car is not wired up for the tank yet I had a carbed engine in there before so I am working on that now and will post up if its spooge but I cant see any reason why it wont work. I will post up and confirm it once I am done

good info guys...Ive got a 4th gen sender/pump assy in my fuel cell right now. I would like to hook up an autometer fuel level gauge to it. From what Im reading I will need to replace the whole assy with the v-6 4th gen unit??

Can I just swap the v-8 fuel pump into the v-6 sender assy then???

Found this

Its easier than that. No need to replace the whole sending unit just the fuel level sender. Heres a couple of pics to show what I changed. Shiity cel phone pics sorry.

The v6 unit did have a slightly different off set to the clips that hold it on to the sending unit so I had to slide the retaing clip in from the top but it fits fine no interference at all. The float arm not shown simply snaps into it but the best thing was all the electrical connections were the same all the plugs simply plugged right in

oh sweet!!! So you are saying you can purchase this part without the whole assy then.....we just need to find a part number?

Does anyone have the part number or any other way of getting the gauge to work?
