Default altenator locations..

Did you know that you can bolt a 2000 truck altenator (maybe the fbody too) directly to the block and use a Dayco 040330 belt ? The belt runs off the rear pulley on an f body harmonic balancer. this bought me a ton of room, and clears my steering box nicely.

So, I bought two 3" long bolts.. metric.. lol. and I bolted the altenator to the block where the two Fbody mount bolts (that also hold the altenator in the bracket) go.. the belt.. well string measuring isn't very accurate..

this pic shows the plug on the altenator. I watched it come off either a 4.8 or a 5.3 pick-up truck. poor thing got t-boned that hard it broke the transmission off the motor...

it isn't to hard too get on. although 3 hands are really helpful. get the belt in the correct grooves, bottom bolt, then top bolt. Careful with the aluminum threads.

So there is no way to put tension on the belt? How tight is it?

It will be interesting to know if it slips when you put an electrical load on it.

Hey started the motor with fan, choke, charge and reference hooked up today. I've been using the battery to run the motor, turn over the motor, etc. the battery has been sitting since May when I started this project.. The altenator picked up the charge load right away, the belt was fine. try it, with that pulley and the 040330 Dayco belt.. I'm amazed. if you need more room.. it certainly made my swap, easier.
13.5 volt at idle. with the fan running.

How far is it from the plastic cover over the steering shaft?

3/8 of an inch.

oh yeah, I ran the car today with the heater blower running full, headlites on, windshield wipers going, cooling fan running.. not a peep from the belt, no slap.. This altenator seems a little stronger then the original. It's running better voltage with all the loads on..
