4-door sleeper.
I'd like something that is completely under the radar, has a comfortable/decent interior (so I can forget about a less-than-stellar exterior), is RWD and will allow a stronger manual or auto tranny to be used.
And I'd like the exterior to not be completely ugly, but still something that surprises the **** out've people.
I passed some sort've older Pontiac or Oldsmobile on the way home from the casino, which got me thinking about it. I don't think they're RWD, but it was just a little four door, sleek (ish), halfway decent commuter looking car... Would be sick with a big V8 under the hood.
Please, any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated. I'd like to pick up the car for under 12k.
You could look for a 78-85 cutless that would be a good car but a little heavy at least for the later years.

With the LQ4, 80E, and NV146 (for AWD) I have to say it scoots pretty good. Still has things to work through, but it is running and runs strong. Sooner or later I'll have all the bugs worked out and will want more power, but for now I'm sticking with the stock motor.
Not too many folks would be concerned to line up next to my Bravada, unless they paid attention to the exhaust note and noticed its not a 4.3L V6. 4door, leather interior, still has the 4x4 tires on it (haven't swapped to a set of 18" Corvette Wagon's yet).

And trust me, the Volvos are tempting.
Having a family-friendly, road-trip worthy interior is important to me. Some tinted windows, and the world outside never knows we're driving in style and comfort in the shitbox, with enough ammo under the hood to dust off any stray Cobras...AMGs...SRTs...

i bought my 94 940 for $1K(it needed an engine). the body is clean and straight. i just finished a 98 ls1 a4 swap and ran a 13.9 at 97 with serious traction problems. the stock 4.10 gears will handle the torque but are way to short for comfortable highway cruise. i'm going to pick-up some 3.31 gears this weekend and have a nice 150 mph autobahn cruiser in a couple of weeks. the midsize package is perfect and talk about sleeper...plus volvos are legendary for their robustness. i love this car...
Fred Dryer, who played in the Hunter cop series, built an awesome car out of one of these. At the time, he used a carbed small block. It had the cop seats, plain wheels, smooth body.
Really looked sharp.
It was in GM High-Tech Performance May 2001, page 24.

Swapping an LS series engine in might not be that easy, but the LT1s are much more friendly. Suncoast and John's Cars are the two most popular kit makers. I am building a forged turbo LS1 with a 4L80E trans for mine. If I could do it all over again, I would buy a low mile LT1/4L60E out of an F-Body and put a $4,000 supercharger kit. I would be burning tire right now instead of burning money!!

other option is the 4 door focus, or focus wagon, nobody would see that comming (yes i know they are fwd but apparently very easy to make rwd)
I think I'm screwed. I went to the casino last night and one of my buds was there with his new car, a '98 BMW 540i. I gotta say, I was sitting in that thing, fantasizing about a real engine under the hood.
