If it wont disengage with power off then your solenoid is stuck and you need a new starter, or a new remote one if you added it on. I would check to make sure you dont have power there first and make sure your ignition switch isnt sticking.
You can check clearance between the bendix drive gear and the flexplate/flywheel teeth with a paper clip. You push out the drive gear and insert the paper clip between the top of the drive gear tooth and the valley between the flywheel teeth. If you cant insert the clip, you need to shim. Shims should be available at any auto parts suppliers. As I recall, if the drive gear sticks, you shim the bolt hole closest to the block. If drive gear slips, you shim the bolt farthest from the block. One other thing I have encountered, is that if the flexplate is powder coated, or painted, you may have the correct clearance, but the coating makes the drive gear stick to the flexplate teeth. I learned this one the hard way, destroyed a brand new high torque starter due to the drive gear sticking. Burned up the bushing in the drive gear.

For the record, the second-solenoid trick seems to be a bit excessive. A cleaner solution, in my opinion, is to run the key wires to a 30A relay to the terminal on the starter; this way you don't need to go slicing and dicing that heavy-gauge positive wire.
