Nissan 240sx speedo
#22
ya few people have done it.. I've tried alot of things. h'm guessing it's a ground problem or maybe a problem at the VSS unit since i had to extend the wires since it was an auto harness. but that stupid box still blinks green. I've tried every output. I'm kinda lost. and have thought about going all autometer but thats $$$$ anyone have a how-to or how U hooked it up?

i'm runnign from the pcm now (4000ppm). i'm thinkin about trying the vss signal which is like 250k ppm i think. if it blinks green though it means it's getting signal... so that should be working fine. just not making it's way to the speedometer somehow... any ideas.

i made a speedo converter out of simple integrated logic chips.
havent tried it, but it should give you a direct reading (no calibration if using different sized wheels or gear ratios)
ive been lazy about shipping it to some one to get it tested.
it needs 4 connections. module power, module ground, signal in, signal out.

if you find out what the other guy did, please post!!
all you need for the tach, is to find the (s13) m53/f1 connection in the passenger kickpanel. tap into the yellow/red striped wire that comes from ecu pin #2 and connect the signal.
s14- same colors, but the wire is pin#26 in the f3 plug. pinout:

240 and ls1 use 4cyl signal.

lol, 12 months after the swap i found the f3 plug! thanks for info on the tach. works great and only took like 5 mins to hook up.
since we are on gauges. can i use the same wire coming off my autometer temp sensor and hook it up to the F3 plug, pin 28? not that i need. i already have 2 temp gauges. i just want the stock one to work.

that im not sure about. havent looked into the properties of the factory temp gage. worth trying.
im sure there's only a resistance to be changed, if any at all.

People do realize the wiring for the speedometer has to be accessed prior to the cluster?
From my under standing the speedometer signal comes into the cluster then is converted and sent out to the ECU via the F3 plug.
Hince why on an SR or KA you can cut the speedometer wire prior to the ECU and it will disable the speedometer cut but the cluster will work still.

I'm kinda confused by what you said. I'm tapping into the f3 plug vss wire that is coming out of the dakota digital box.

natedawg - I have the speedo working in my S14 and this is what I did. I tried what you have done and tapped into the F3 plug for the speedo and it didn't work. If you have the FSM, look on page 76 of the EL section to follow along. On the KA tranny, there are two wires coming from the VSS. They run into plug E202 from the lower engine harness. This plugs into E19 right under the fuse box. I cut the R/Y and R wires going into E202 and ran long wires to the DD output (I used output 3) and signal ground connections. The complete circuit would be the LS1 VSS wire going into input, then out via these two wires into E202/E19, through plugs E109/M9, and finally to the speedo. Plug F3 is not in the loop. I don't recall offhand the configuration of the switches but I can check later today and post what I have at that point. Hope this helps.

is that the Y and red and yellow wires on the plug with like 10 wires that come out of the ka tranny. mine is auto. But it's like a white braided line. then goes into just black tape.
lemme know i cut that plug off the tranny i just gotta find it.

What I was saying is what PXR just said. You cant use the F3 wiring because that is not a feed to the cluster it is only a feed from the cluster to the ECU.
In a 240 the speedometer signal goes directly to the cluster via the internal harness that enters the driver side of the car. It only passes through the F3 plug after it has been decoded by the cluster then sent to the ECU. The 240sx cluster changes the ppm over to an electrical signal the factory 240sx ECU can recognize. That is why you cluster wont work when wired into the F3 plug.
Also can you not take the cluster out of the dash and just find your VSS wires there and catch them before they enter the cluster? Or does it change some where in the harness before the cluster?
Essentially if the cluster receives the R/y and R wires you find in the E19 plug then you could just eliminate that wire and run your box internal only. Hook the LS1 VSS wire (green wire I think have to look again) to the input then hook the two wires with extensions off the back of the cluster over to the box and your done.

aight i found the harness. had some problems but now i figuring out settings. I used output 1 and the sensor ground. not sure which color is going where. but 1-on 2-on 3-off 4-on. but it finally works thanks guys!

this thread is another testament on why hinson super cars is a bunch of morons.
they've been offering that "wiring service" for two years and they still cant figure it out.
glad you got it working.
