Default AC Compressor relocation bracket

As some of you know I am putting a LQ4 in my 1990 truck. I have the engine sitting in it now but it looks like I need a relocation bracket for my existing AC compressor. I know S & P has a kit for that that includes a compressor, the bracket and a belt etc. for 700 bucks. I am wondering if there are any other options that might be cheaper and allow me to use my existing AC compressor.

I have also heard that I could switch the pulley system over to a vette pulley system and the block should be the same and that way the compressor would be higher. Would this in any way be a resonable or viable option?

Any help is appreciated.

THanks

Lots of people here would like an answer for the AC bracket question other than the S&P $700 one.

The 'vette option would require all of the accessories changed over as well. Depending on how cheap you can find all of that for, it may be cheaper to do the S&P route. Doesn't S&P make just a bracket without the new compressor? I'm also interested in an answer to this because I may need to relocate as well.

All of the accy drives that I have found for the LSx motors place the A/C compressor low on the passenger side.

Your 1990 truck should have the R4 radial compressor just like the 3rd gen f-bodies. I think it is hawks 3rd gen that makes a relocation bracket to mount a R4 compressor high on the pass side, but that is for the f-body accy drive. You may possibly be able to use it if you space it 3/4" forward (the truck accy drive places the belt 3/4" further forward than the f-body belt position). There was also a member by the name of 5.3 Racer who mounted a r4 compressor high on the pass side using a 4.3L v6 bracket. You should be able to find the post by searching. Either way you will probably have to have new A/C hoses made.

I was working on a high mount bracket for the truck accys to mount a LT1 A/C compressor on the pass side. But now I am thinking of just notching the frame to use a factory truck LSx compressor. I have the bracket ~80% finnished, but it would require extra idler pulleys because there is not much belt length selection when you get to a belt that is 118" long. I posted pictures of my bracket, you can find the thread by searching truck high mount

I couldn't find the AC brackets on hawks site (but maybe they are there somewhere...?). Her is a link that seems to have some that look to work:

Let us know how you finally go....

I had a couple of posts showing an A6 compressor mounted high on the passenger side. It uses a 92.5" belt. Total cost was around $180 for the aluminum, pulleys, tensioner, belt, bolts and jig-saw blades.

Could you share that info? I would like to be able to use the older compressor. that would be perfect! Would that work with my LQ4?

76LQ9TA`s bracket will work on your LQ4 as both motors use the same accys/brackets.

This is the alternator bracket. You shouldn't need this but someone else may need to lower theirs for hood clearance.

This is the ac bracket. The compressor is from a 96 corvette. The tensioner is a Dayco with a higher tension rate. I have the part number at work. I also used the flanged idler pulley. I have seen other ls1 f-body cars have their belts slip off so this is why I chose these parts

Why not post them up if you're sending them around? I'll gladly host them on my web space

You can post them if you want. Send me an email and I'll give them to you. I couldn't post them because they are .tif files and photobucket doesn't allow that type. When I converted them, they lost some of the resolution. This is why I emailed them to people.

I have had the same difficulty in posting tiff files to the net. Once you convert them to jpg's, you loose too much detail and people can't read them anymore.

I talked to one of the suppliers we use for work today about cutting these brackets out of aluminum. If I get 20 sets made, the cost for the aluminum and cutting the brackets with a waterjet, would be around $110. I have had alot of people requesting the drawings and it took awhile for me to cut the aluminum with a jigsaw. I would have had this done for the set I made but every place I called wanted $300 minimum to setup a waterjet cutter. If enough people want this, I'll place an order. I would like to replace the ones I made with ones with cleaner cuts on the metal.

I believe John B, one of the moderators of this section, sells a high mount A/C bracket. Here is a picture:

http://www.ls7montess.com/

If John isn't making these any longer, another source for a very similar bracket is Modern Classics Automotive, 503-635-8252, ask for Steve. I've used his brackets on two swaps now, they've worked great, and are somewhere in the 100 - 200 dollar range (don't quote me, can't remember exactly).

John B`s brackets are designed for the f-body accy. brackets.

76LQ9TA`s bracket is for the truck accy brackets.
