C5/C6 Rear End Conversions?
Just curious if anyone has transplanted the C5 or C6 rear end/rear mounted tranny into anything. Seems like a good idea for traction and handling... and I'm considering it for a 1970 Camaro w/LS2. Thanks guys

there is a few guys who have done it. it is a lot of fabrication. you need two cut out the rear sheet metal to make way for the trans-axle. you can either chose to use the stock cradle or fabricate new suspension mounting points. here is a link to a guy who is doing it to his first generation camaro.

you can also go to lateralg.com forums and look for a guy who is doing it to his older truck.

I am going a little different route...we are creating a hybrid that is the C5 suspension with an 05 GTO differential. Originally had the entire GTO IRS in the car but found it to be too wide, so I figured if we were going to modify something lets go with something that started life better than the GTO IRS...we'll see how it turns out. As you can see we fab'd our own cradle out of boxed steel...as with all projects that never end, we may go back some day and fab a new one out of aluminium...these pics show the rear setup tacked into place. Still a lot more welding and LOTS of cleanup...

Good luck.

Sorry it was 21st Century Street Machines

They use it on their C5 IRS suspension for a 1st gen Camaro. I emailed the guy and they will sell just the adapter, but don't advertise it. If I remember it was around $800 or 900.

There is also a custom made input shaft that we have made to use this adapter. The adapter uses a nine inch ford bearing support and yolk that you need to provide and assemble with the adapter and input shaft we sell. I don’t do the sales but I know it is right around $1000 for both peaces.

A C4 Corvette Dana 44 rear gives all the handling advantages without all the fabrication nightmares. You can buy a nice D44 rear for about $1500 if you shop around, and they are way eaiser to install. The rear-mounted transmission really adds a lot of work and cost to the install, and in many cases, the rear seat becomes unusable because of the intrusion from the trans. JMHO
