Default Smaller Bellhousing

Who makes a smaller bellhousing? I'm doing a LQ4/T56 conversion on a Z32 and I am trying to get the motor and transmission as low and close to the firewall as possible.

I'm looking for something like this:

Oh yeah, I tried searching but the search feature is acting wierd...

Not quite sure what you are asking but looks like you found it. Both of the pictured bellhousing will fit on an LS1 with some teeny adjustments. It is the small flywheel that could be the issue.

I just got those pics off of Summit, Summit says the red one will fit my LQ4/T-56 combo but the bellhousing's official site says that it won't fit. I'm sure someone is running something like this.....

The red one looks like a standard Lakewood style housing. They call the version without the block plate a conversion housing. A standard small block housing will fit on the LSx block minus 1 bolt. It is at the 2 o'clock position and the LSx does not have a threaded hole or boss there. I used a standard small block Chevy II scattershield on my Nova. I had to cut up the block plate so that it would lay flat on the block face. If I did it again I would just leave the block plate off entirely to take advantage of the spacing it would give up. The LSx has some housings in the area under the flywheel that prevent the block plate from laying flat. The housing itself fits fine minus that 1 bolt. The locating pins fit nice and snug. You will have to figure out the throwout bearing and clutch setup but it is easy enough. Pay special attention to the pilot bushing/bearing to be sure the input shaft engauges in it properly.

Try looking into the modular Bell housing by McLeod... But if your looking for a bell housing that is smaller in size.. I really don't think you will find one or have much of a choice. They are pertty much standard in size, not really built to be small in size.

Good luck.

Come to think about it I'm not really looking for a smaller bellhousing, I'm looking for a diffrent shaped bellhousing. I need the bellhousing to hug the block like this.

The tranny tunnel is pretty tight in my Z32. If I could get something like this it would be sweet!

Your not going to find anything like that. The reason is that the LS1 uses a 168 tooth flywheel and it needs the room in the bellhousing to accomodate the flywheel. The engine picture posted above looks like an old small block chevy. It uses a 153 tooth flywheel that allows the use of the smaller bellhousing.

Here's an idea ... since you are going manual ... purchase that bellhousing as it will fit with the LSx engines. Install a 153 tooth flywheel and give McLeod a call. Ask them about the small starter block for the LS-engines. Red Roberts had me do the drawing back when I worked for B&M. They should have it in production, as he need this block adapter to work on his '55 chevy with an LS1 he was working on. Good luck!
