Default alternator isnt charging my battery...

soo i rigged my alternator up soo it doesnt need a pcm. driving to the gas station today for the first time the battery voltage guage droped down to "0" and when i got to the gas station i couldnt start my jeep back up

now i think i have it hooked up right, i have the +terminal going to the back of the alternator, and then on the connector i have pin B going to a resisted 12v line from ign. switch.

i have the 12v. rigged up by using a relay and a 6v signal. can a relay stop working after a certain amount of time? because it will work fine for about 10min. then all of a sudden the volt guage on the cluster will drop to 0

Yes, relays fail. If the reference (low current) voltage is hooked up to the ignition switch, why the relay?

You do have a fusible link in the line next to the battery don't you? If the alternator ever shorts internally, you will have some bad juju if you don't. What is the relay doing? If you have more current flowing through it than it can handle, it will fail. If you could post a drawing of what you have, that would be great!

the relay still works, you can hear it click on when the ign. is turned on.. its just after 10min. the volt guage will go to 0 and thats when it seems like it starts to lose power fast

heres a diagram of how i have it rigged lol

nvm dont worry about it guys, i grabbed a 12v signal from a sensor on the harness that i wasnt using and connect that to the resisted signal line going to the alternator, works perfect now!

What size resistor did you use?

Here is a diagram for hooking up the LSX alternator in an early car. The only wires you need are the large wire to the battery and the one for pin L. Mine charges fine this way.

I'm a tech for Powermaster, and I can tell you that your alternator is living on borrowed time if it is wired as illustrated. The "L" terminal was designed to recieve a low voltage ECM signal and will eventualy burn up if subjected to a full 12 volts. A 47 ohm resistor needs to be soldered in line in the 12 volt switched wire to the L terminal to drop the voltage to a regulator friendly level.

...BTW a fusable link is not necessary in the charge wire going to the battery, just make sure you use a large gauge wire and route it carefully like you would a battery cable. You will virtually never have an issue with an alternator short, your only concern is shorting the battery, and as long as the insulation and conectors on the charge wire is intact, that will not happen.

47 ohm or 470 0hm? The GM diagrams that I have list the resistance as 470 ohms.

Guys, we've been over it 100 times (where's that old thread where I explained it all?)

Don't wire it like LS1MCSS shows in his diagram, that will do it in quickly!

You need the 470 ohm resistor in the "L" line.

That diagram is straight from the S&P website. Guess I better add the resistor to mine this weekend then.

Agreed! There is no useable search on this site right now.

I don't doubt it; they like to sell alternators!
