I've done it....
Oilpan and Exhaust are the 2 biggest things to address.....
Republic of Kalifornia emissions are tough to deal with. I'm not sure that there is a legal V8 swap for a S10.

There's also a 30+ page S10 swap thread, that has most of the 2wd answers. You might spend some time and read it. I know alot of it is BS, but there is some useful info in there......
2wd doesn't have to clear the front differential, which is good. But you've still got to modify either the crossmember or oilpan to clear.
Exhaust is less of an issue, since you can get headers for a 2wd swap (I think they're 1 5/8" tubing, so probably a bit small, but...)
But the Republik of Kalifornia's emissions laws are fairly strict. You'll need to research whether you can get an LS1 V8 powered S10 through emissions in CA. Because if it fails emissions, you've either got to fix it, move it out of state, or take it off the road (because the emissions ****'s can take your plates). I live in Maryland, and I've got hoops to jump through, they're just not nearly as bad as Kalifornia.

An untold amount of labor went into that project.
