V6 to ls1 hey guys i have seen a camaro for sale here locally for $2,000. it has alot of miles and needs a new paint job. well my question is, how hard would it be for me (an intermediate level with this) to swap the v6 out with an ls1?? please give me some input.
It is not that hard, you would need to get a 98+ K-member or a aftermarket K-Member.. then everything else from a donner car (find a wrecked donner).
Engine with all accessories, wiring, PCM, BCM, Trans, fuel tank or upgrade the 97/95, etc.. If you have to piece all of the parts.. it will not be very cost wise to do it.
It would be just a complete upgrade with OEM parts. Check out some of the early Gen 4 F-Body that have already been upgraded to Late Gen 4 F-Body drive train.

not to hijack the thread but, hows the clearance under your ss hood 95greenz28? ive been looking around for an older (clean) body for dirt cheap to swap an ls1 into, but the warnings are always that the ls1 doesnt fit under a stock type hood. that instead either a huge cowl is needed or a front end 98+ swap.

I would go with the 97 due to the OBD2 system for the 98 on up wiring. The only thing to look out for in the wiring is power feeds and auto to standard transmissions. The engine harness will fit just like the cars with V8s from factory. Most V6 cars do not have ignition power feeds for the V8, so you may need to add some powers. If you get as much of the doner car as possible then you will be ok
I Like 6spd Manual For Playing Around In Town, While I Like Auto For Straightline Punches And Races. Ive Had Both, A 98 Auto T/a And An 01 6spd Firehawk. I Like Being Lazy In The Auto, But The 6spd Was A Blast To Play With.
My 98 Auto Was Way Faster, But I Had Put $3k Into It. I Dont Know What Size Final Gear The 6spd Had, But The Auto Had A 3.42. That Alone Will Completely Change The Way The Car Feels. My Opinion On The Auto Vs. Manual Choice Is Based On Gear Change Speed. An Auto Will Shift Faster Than You Can In A 6spd, But Theres So Much More Control In What Gear You Want At A Certain Time. You Can Manually Throw The Car Into 2nd Or 3rd In A Manual To "go Baby Go" Or You Can Punch The Throttle On The Auto And Hope It Gets To The Right Gear.
camaro-94-z28, thanks for letting me know that i wont need a new hood, but i was thinking about a 6.0 instead of the 5.7 ls1. a friend of mine had a 6.0 in his truck and it was badass.
The stock LS1 filter/intake air box will not fit inder the LT1 hood.
If you don;t currently have a Camaro I would suggest you look around for a 98-99 LS1 car. They are getting quite cheap and after buying a car and everything to conver it you will have spent more than the price of a LS1 Camaro. If you don;t like the look of the LS1 front clip, swap it. Swaping the clip is way cheaper than swaping the motor.

RE AND CHERYL, i was thinking that but i cant seem to find a 98-99 ls1 car for less than 5,000.. thats really all i can afford to spend on the car itself. i found a 99 trans am for 3200 that had 74k miles but i think something must be wrong with it because the exterior looks great and it has a 427 engine. what you think?
