Default whats wrong w/ the 5.7?

its way easer to find (for me) a 5.7 than a 6.0 or ls1 so my question is other than c.i.d. what is the differances from 5.7 to 6.0? SHORT BLOCK ONLY. i want to put differant heads with a corvette style blower on it -etc. going into a 1980 t/a

Not that I'm an expert on ls engines but... an l92 head or similar will only fit on an engine with a minimum of a 4.0 bore which would only be a 6.0 or larger. "correct me if Im wrong". I think most of the heads in that class are geared towards a larger dissplacement engine.

one reason I would expect to find more ls1 than ls2 is just that the ls1 has been around longer correct? and also a lot of people just started looking for 6.0 instead which reduces demand a bit, not to mention the ls3 and ls7 ect

there's nothing wrong with an ls1

If you're talking about a Gen I small block 5.7L(350) or LT1 motor, then, no, the LS1 heads will not just bolt on. The LS1 was a clean sheet redesign of the small block. Even though they share the same metric displacement, they are VERY different motors, and actually do have a slight different displacement (346 cu. in. LS1 vs. 350 cu. in. Gen I SBC).

I don't believe they ever made a 5.7L LSx iron block.... I think the only iron block LSx motors were found in 99+ GM trucks. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

LS1 heads fit LS1 motors nothing else. LS1s have 6 bolt mains, 15 degree valve angle heads, fast burn combustions chambers (piston actually comes about .005" out of the top of the block forcing combustion to take place in the head combustion chamber), the head design also has equally spaced intake and exhaust ports unlike the standard chevy siamesed style.

Not sure what corvette style blow you are talking about but i would assume a Magnusun subercharger as its (as far as i know) the only blower for ls1s that sits on as the intake manifold. All of the others are mounted as an accesory (and more efficient)

A magnuson will cost you just as much as the engine. If you go LS1 you will need to put on some low compression heads like 317s or something. But no the blocks are not the same. 6.0L truck motors are iron, 6.0L aluminum blocks are LS2s. They have all of the same things but a 5.7L block has a smaller bore like 3.905 or something as opposed to 4.005 or whatever. But yes, 5.7Ls have all of the same things that the 6.0Ls do.

Edelbrock heads arent really the top of the line anymore for LS1s anyway. Trickflow has some new i 13 degree (i think they are) heads out that are supposed to be pretty good. You can get a nice set of Patriot 317 heads with your 72cc combustion chamber (will lower your CR) for under $1400. There are a few guys making 500rwhp+ NA on stock 346 (5.7L) LS1 shortblocks. The crank is good to 1000hp so there really is no need to upgrade it. Just get a nice set of rods and dish pistons.

The Gen III 5.7 engine only came in two configuration or engine codes.. that being the LS1 and LS6. They only came in aluminum.

So if you have have a iron block 5.7, it would have to be a Gen I or II engine (L98, LT1/4, etc.. or one of the Truck Iron Vortec 5.7 engine.

There is really nothing wrong with starting with a Gen III 5.7 LS1/6... other than giving up some displacement. You are also limited to which heads you can use. None of the Gen III or IV 6.0L head will fit, many will put on modified 5.3L heads. This is due to the smaller Cylinder bore size. There has been some improvements over the Gen III engine as compared to the Gen IV (LS2, L92, LS7, etc).

But your plan for a Gen III 5.7 with Edelbrock heads on it and a Magnuson Supercharger should get you past 450hp maybe 500+ with the correct heads, cam and Tune.

Are you by chance thinking of the 5.3 truck engines? Those are iron blocks with the same configuration as the aluminum 5.7s. They are available and cheaper than an LS1. You give up about 20 cubic inches, kinda like running an old school 327 vs a 350. But all the same parts will bolt to them. There are quite a few low buck swaps here on the forum using the 5.3s and they can put out very respectible numbers.
