1972 nova lq4-
Hello guys, and gals, this is my first post on this forum and i've wandered over from team nova.i have a 72 nova and a lq4 i just pulled out of a 05 G-van with 317 heads on it.well 1 any way the other is cracked from the crash. i am going to put this motor in my 72 with a carb setup, not sure on trans yet,was thinkin 6 speed richmond but might get lazy and toss in th 350.but anyway i want to go solid roller cam port heads, and intake and make some decent power with it.i've been told that you need to put in different rods and pistons to take any kind of power out of these motors. is this true? by my calculations this motor should be around 500 horse and i have a hard time believing that the bottom end won't hold up. but thats why im here to ask you fine people.so let me know what you guys think and if anyone else has done a lsx swap into a gen three nova let me know maybe we can exchange some info and help each other out and vise versa i'd appreciate it.
thanks in advance--Dan
p.s.-does anyone have a driver side 317 head for sale?lol

Well sounds like you have a good project going. You can make good power with lsx engines with minmal work. Wish I was messin with these before my SBC's. If I was you go with the L92 heads (I think 07 up 6.2L) These heads will flow awesome.. Intake is over 300 cfm out of box. And find a good matching cam. 500 hp will be well within your reach and maybe then some. Might as well as put new rod bolts in to for security. The bottom ends are pretty strong. Good luck!

If you're going with a 6 speed go with a T56 6 speed. A TH350 or any of the SBC transmissions will need adapters to space the flexplate for the converter or most likely a different flywheel and clutch. The rods and pistons in these engines are good for 500rwhp easy. I plan on putting down 480rwhp when i swap out my heads and spraying a 150shot on top of that and I'm not too worried about the internals. The pistons are really the weakest part and they're not that need. The cranks are good to over 1000rwhp.
Dont go solid roller. I'm running a 236/236 .651/.651 110+4 on the stock hydraulic lifters, rockers and aftermarket pushrods and springs for now. It'll see close to 7000rpm too. You'll be close to 500 with just a cam. You're LQ4 does have lower compression though so rather than buying another 317 head i would just look into a nice set of cylinder heads with 67cc chambers or less to bump that compression back up.
I had a 2001 Z06 and it put down 465rwhp 422rwtq with an uported LS6 intake, completely stock fuel system and throttble body. And that was on a 346. These engines are powerhouses.
For your carb setup you need a edelbrock victor junoir intake manifold from summit for the LS1 (took me about 2 months to get mine from various distributors) its about $300. Then you need an MSD 6010 ignition box which will plug into your crank and cam sensors and is fully programmable with a laptop for your timing curves, and vacuum advance when using a map. It also has a 2 step rev limiter and a timing retard switch (for nitrous) It will fire your factory 8 coils and acts as its own distrubutor. Its $330 from summit.

I have a '72 Nova which I just finished putting a stock LQ4 with th350 into. Whatever info you want to know feel free to ask (maybe in this thread and we can build it up as a place for 3rd gen Nova-lsx swap info).
I'm also really looking into a 5 or 6 speed swap, has anyone done this into a 68-74 Nova? If so, which one, and what modifications were needed? Is a Nova tunnel/floorpan at all similar to that of a Camaro/Firebird??

I guess the question would be, what is your expectation and usage...?
Anything done to a 1st Gen F-Body would be the same for the 68-72 X-Body Nova.. I have a 71 that is waiting for the funds LOL
Unless your all out racing.. you wouldn't need a solid cam. Check both S&P and BRP web pages for swap into there 1st Gen F-Bodys for info. See if you can find a complete engine and trans setup.. you will save a lot of money and time. My suggest would be to find a F-Body pull out. But you can always go 6.0L (LQ4/9) or 6.2L (L92) for the big inches!
My 2 Cents... keep us posted.

I will try to get some pic's this wkend.I have the motor as low as I can get it,and back as much as possilble. bottom of the pan is 1/4 off the frame,Rh valve cover 1 1/2" off the firewall.Better measurement front of intake where the tb bolts to is 23 " from the firewall.
Tunnel mods none, but I did remove the reverse lock out solenoid, it was hitting the side of the tunnel, for now I will leave it off and install a freeze out plug in the hole. Had to cut away about half of the floor support brace for the shifter clearance, could of cut a little less but wanted easy access.
