Default 4.10 Gears vs. Headers? What mod is best bang for the buck?

Looking into 4.10 gears, and headers... Im on a limited budget so will have to go with 1 for now.

Which mod will give me a better "throttle response"? My guess, is the gears. Car (2002 z06) just has CAI for now

itll most likely just give you more tire smoke. not to mention tiring your arm out shifting between 1,2, and 3 all the damn time. get headers, that way you get the power plus better sound as a bonus.

you will feel way more of a difference with 4.10s over headers.
Header will make more power and probaby show a faster mph at the track but for street driving, I vote 4:10s. I had them with my WS6 6 speed and it was a night & day difference.

The gears get my vote. But i'd recommend 3:90's if the car is mostly for street use. The performance difference between 4:10 and 3:90 will be almost unnoticeable, but shifting and highway cruising will be more friendly with 3:90's.

^^^^ what he said. The stock gears are more than enough with the ratio of the trans.

The z06's have a different trans than normal corvettes or fbody's. As you start making power you will NOT want 390's or 410's. All it will do is lead to more spinning and buying tires. Now if you are a track car that is different but for a street car keep the 342's. Headers are one of the mods to do.

I'd like to correct myself. In your case having a Z06 with the M12 trans, I'd keep the stock gears and go with the headers. My last post were my thoughts for having the M6 trans.
I agree, get the headers.

4.10s!!!

I have headers, and full exhaust and good cam. still wish i had gears.

had them in my f body and it was wht best mod i ever did.

all the people saying mroe tire smoke....... then they either cant drive it, and dont know how to put good tires on it.

the reason it would casue this is casue it applies the torque faster and at a better ration, which moves the car faster.

its like saying dont put a blower on it it will just spin....

Point to ponder- The stock 3.42 gears in the Z06 which has the M12 trans is pretty much the same as having 3.90 gears in the regular coupe with its M6 trans. RPM at any MPH in 6th gear for the Z06 M12 with 3.42 gears is the same as the couple's M6 with 3.90 gears. Look at eastcoastsupercharging.com, they have a "RPM vs. MPH in 6th gear for selected transmissions" chart. A Z06 with 4.10's cruising down the highway at 70 mph will be at 2,075 rpm, no thank you for a street car.
People with coupes saying they wish they had gears (yes I'm one of them), well we're not in the same boat as you guys with the Z06 when it comes to gearing.

If your Vette had the same gearing as the z06, you might think different. Just saying, the stock z06 gearing would be about the same as a C6 with 3.90's.

Get headers...
I run 3.73's and once you get a lot of power, it's rather pointless in the lower gears and quite frustrating actually.

Your TA did have a MN12 trans and if you put 4.10's in the rear with a MN12 its like 4.56 or worse. There comes a point when you are making lots of power you dont want or need lots of gear on a street car. A track on tires all the time is different.

i have a 03 z06 with 4.10's and love them. car makes 485 at the wheels and as long as its 50 degrees or warmer out, my m&h drag radials hook from a 1st gear 20 roll. i daily drive the car, drive it on the highway and the interstate and dont mind it at all.

I had a 02 Z06 with every bolton and cam except still had stock convertors with 4:10 gears in it and hardened input and output shafts. Made 430 hp and 400 ft lbs torque to the wheels on motor. Had 345 BF drag radials on it and never spun from a 20 roll on the streets or atleast on concrete. Yes you would row through the gears pretty quick but once in third and and fourth the car pulled like a freight train while others would fall back thnking I was spraying. I would reccommend them if just going motor (450-500 RWHP) and run a taller tire due to the 345's would only get me too about 122 mph in fourth. I had an additional 150 TNT kit on it that would make me switch into 5th in the 1/4. Would have rather kept the 3:42's or maybe 3:73 to be able to spray out of the hole with that gearing. First and second went by in a flash.

If choosing headers go the 1 7/8" route as they will definately make more power in long run and don't have to try and sell the smaller headers once you start modifying.

Either way, they will both get good results. But is always nice to have a nice sounding car that you can hear when rowing through the gears.

Don't do either. Save the $ and start buying used parts to piece together a FI setup instead of dropping money on minor improvements and tuning after each one. I did this with a turbo kit and couldn't be happier. When I stay out of the throttle it is pretty much stock, but when it is time to go it will move.
