02 has a different cam and lightweight valves. Also has no pre/pup cats and also has HUD. 01 has 385 HP rating while 02-04 are rated at 405 HP.

With that said, 01's are a great value. Values are softer on the 01 because of extra 20 HP and HUD on newer models. The extra 20 HP can be overcome with a decent intake and exhaust. Headers will probably put you over the top.

Try to drive both and make up your own mind.

Also depends on the color you want too. White was only offered on the 01s, same with NBM i believe being in 02 it switched to EBM.

Both can be turned into awesome machines, but i'd probably get an 02+ just for the more initial power.

The 02 is more refined. As I remember the oil consumption problem wasn't an issue in the 02's like the 01's. Get an 02.

02 and later. The '01s have the ring issue. They have no hud. They have a smaller cam, and they have pup cats. If you plan on doing headers, and a H/C job, then an '01 is fine. But '02 and later if you want to stay close to stock.

The 01's have numerous problems, steer clear of them unless you are just looking for a bargain. The 02-up are a much safer buy.

If you plan on doing many mods or ever plan on putting a forged motor in the car I would buy a 01' it will save you money. If you going to stay near stock then I would go for the 02 or newer.

You guys kill me with the 01s are junk lines, I really appreciate it as you are really helping out the value of my Car.(NOT)

SOME NOT ALL of the 2001s have the Oil Scraper Ring issue....SOME! -do a search or go to other sites and ask 01 owners if they have a problem and if so has it been rectified through warranty.

Mine had the problem, now I have new 2002 Pistons and Rings but I guess that still makes my car junk because it is an 01 and does not have HUD.

I have have heard plenty of 2002 owners complaining of the same Oil Consumption Issue.

Also that is what the warranty is for,

I hate to tell you but the 2001 Z06 is not a pile and that little 20 HP can be made up in a jiffy (trust me).

So you have HUD, so does my wifes GTP.

Saying not to buy a 2001 Z06 due to the Oil Issue, is like saying not to buy the LS1 Fbody 98-01 for the same thing. THEY USE THE SAME RINGS AND PISTONS!!

A small percentage of LS1's have the oil issue.

A 2001 is just a cam away from identical performance to the 02. Headers only get small gains, the stock exhaust is very good.

Remember that a Z06 weighs 3080lb, from any year. Do that to your F-body and you are driving around in Theft Recovery Mode.

Hell, if he plans on doing that just get an FRC instead. Cheaper, 6 speed and Z51. He doesnt have all the goodies of the LS6 but who cares if he's puttin a forged motor in.

WFOLS1, I guess I missed the part of this thread where anybody referred to 01's as a pile. Seems like a sensitive subject for you- so, based on your experience you would prefer an 01? Bet not.

I was referring to MANY threads and posts on this and other sites having negative comments such as this in regards to the 2001 LS1/LS6 not just THIS thread.

BaddogZ wouldnt you rather have a Z28 than a Z06...Bet not.

I remember looking at both 2001's and 2002 Z06's..

The price differential was enough that I grabbed an 01.

Dam fine car and a great decision..IMHO..

O2's are winners as well if your staying totally stock..which I had a feeling I would do...(but then we all say that don't we and as time goes on....Mod fever hits..)

I believe what others have said pretty much sums up some good advice.

Good luck with either car you decide to go with..

I hear the AFR heads bolt on to a stock cammed 2002 Z06 and throw down without headers 409 rwhp....so that would be my recommendation...

You get the prize for "statement of the obvious."

You never answered my question, 01 or 02?

Ok here it is,I would Seriously buy the 2001 for the following reasons.

If there is an Oil Issue GM will take care of it,they did for me and many others.
In addition the money you save by purchasing the 2001 as opposed to the 2002 (or later) would give you a head start on some Mods.

If you just have to have the HUD and the 20 xtra HP buy a Cam Kit,gut the Pup Cats and buy a used HUD Unit with the money you saved by purchasing the 2001 and you will have a car that makes a lot more power than if you would have bought the 2002.-IMHO.

Again the Cam is the largest difference, change that and it evens the playing field.

If you are going to defend the 2001 over the 2002, then just buy a 99 FRC and save even more money. Don't get all upset and feel like you have to justify your purchase decision. But, if I were going out and looking for a stock car to start from I'd select a 2002.

OK yes, I give up IF hypothetically they were the same price yes I would take the 2002--who wouldnt?

Any time you can get something newer FOR THE SAME $ you would be foolish not to get the newest model.

I think you are missing my point,
All I am trying to get at is that the 2001 is just as great of a car as the 2002(minus a couple of small details) i.e. HUD and the 405hp Badge, the HUD can be retro fitted for about 5-6 hundred dollars, and that 20HP difference between the two does not equate to a whole lot of difference on the street, track or highway.

If you have any of the known 2001 issues GM will take care of them,in the meantime if you bought the 2001 you would have saved some dough to better spend elsewhere.
