Default Tips on pulling an A4 out?

Need to have my tranny gone thru and wondering if someone had a write up/walkthru on this. Or just some good advice.

Dont want to pay a shop because i already know Ill want to put in gears while its torn apart, and im sure they would charge a fortune for just taking the tranny out.

A lift. Its not actually that bad to do with a lift. If you like to keep your car clean, it would be a good time to clean every thing and wash the rear cradle while you have it out. A lot of dirt and sand gets built up in those areas, especially on top of the transmission in the grooves.

If you have not replaced your side cover o-ring on the diff., replace it while you are right there and put a small bead of RTV sealer around the o-ring. Those side covers leak all the time, probably the most common thing on Vettes. Replace all the tranny seals while you have it out, they leak every now in then. Also, replace the seals for the axles.

I jacked the rear up to check it out today. I agree w/ the lift, with having to drop the cradle I really doubt I cant get the car high enough.

How does the torque tube unbolt. Is it right there at the back or do you have to drop the long shield and unbolt it at the front of the motor, drop it all out then unbolt it from the rear? I've never seen a C5 all torn apart before.

Thanks for those links. Nothing like a well documented removal to help others out.

I used both of those to be me drop and reinstall my driveline. I can be done with jackstands, but that route is a PITA. A lift would make the job much easier

Thanks for posting the write ups it explains alot.

Hw much different is the A4 vs. M6? I mean where is the converter and how do i undo the tq tube from the bellhousing on the motor? I could see and understand how the tq tube has an input shaft that goes thru the clutch but how does it work w/ a converter?

you dont have to unbolt the torque tube from the bellhousing. just remove the exhaust and tunnel plate then lower it down-my torque tube had a sticker on it showing how far you could tilt it before causing damage in the engine compartment

I'm about to do mine myself, on jack stands. I know it's not going to be easy, but it can be done. My advice would be. Invest in a service manual, and lots of beer for your friends.
