Z06 or 911, Question from a 50 year old

Ya, I'm also one of those guys that has had, and have, both. I currently drive a 944 daily. It handles great, (better than the 911's) preforms.. "well", and is just fun to drive. The maintenance is a killer though. Special tools for everything. The 911's I've had were the same. They are wonderful machines in their own right... but they aint no corvette. I'd still like to have a Cayman though.. for a daily driver.
I've owned 5 Porsche's, and 4 Corvettes. The vettes were everything I always wanted in a Porsche. Now if Chevrolet could get Porsche to build their transmissions, we'd have the ultimate driving machine.

For a toy, the C63 is out as is any 4 door sedan. No matter how great the numbers are, you are still driving a boat, not a sports car.
Between a 911 and a Z06, it comes down to driving style. The Z06 has lots of low end TQ which is great when just driving around in less than full race mode. The Z06 is easy to push hard and pretty forgiving for a car of its power if pushed past its limits. I have not driven a recent 911 (my price range was the boxster s). By comparison, the Boxster felt very tight, but let me know about every surface imperfection (wasn't harsh though) but just needed to be spun up before it had any urgency to gain speed.

I would suggest you take them each out for a test drive and YOU decide. Most will tell you to buy the Z on LS1tech, but if you ran the same thread on the P car forum....guess which car most would recommend?
Good dilemma to be in.... regardless it will be a nice improvement over your "heavy" GTO.
I would try to own both.....get a used 911 turbo now....then sell it next year for a used ZR-1.

Looking to purchase my last personal car (or TOY). I want something fun to drive, speedy but also somewhat sofisticated. I have had all types pf cars from family sedans, race cars (old road course guy) to econo boxes. I currently have an '04 GTO (heavily modded) and an F250 which is daily driver.
I'm currently eyeing the Corvette Z06, Porsche 911, BMW Z4 M and Merc C63 AMG. The Z06 and 911 are probably the top. I love both cars for different reasons.
I am definetly not a Buick kind of guy, I would have to shoot myself brfore that ever happened.
What do you Corvette folks like best and the least about your cars? and what experience have you had with the other brands?

If you are looking for performance, then I would say corvette. Check out this link, the gmg cup car vs. a c5 zo6.

Here is the good news, you can't go wrong with either choice!

i agree !!!!!!! if this is the last car for you. get the ZR1 ! amazing car for the $ it takes another $80,000 to get same performance from another manufacturer. plus parts will be a hell of a lot cheaper than a foreign car

I happen to work for a Porsche dealership and just got back from 2009 911 launch training in California. I had the opportunity to take a Carrera S on an hour long "spirited" drive through a mountain pass and I was amazed with the handling, ride and the new PDK transmission is unbelievable. In sport mode it is extremely intuitive and would perform downshifts just when I wanted them and since it is a dual clutch gearbox you dont get the downshift lung, just hear and see the RPM's shoot up. Soo smooth.
In the twisties when I thought I was at the limit I just kept feeding in more steering and it kept going, even over the bumps and irregularities in the road. The rear did not get unsettled on me once. Even in a few places I really felt my C5 would, the Porsche just ate them up. It really is an amazing machine and I recomend driving both. If you drive the Porsche make sure you drive an "S" model with the PDK trans and make sure it is equipped with PASM Sport Plus. Porsche equivalent to selective ride.
