Default Whos running some GTO spare tire skinnies !

iv seen it before but i just picked up my first GTO skinnie spare i just need one more....really excited and wondering how much weight i really will loose going from snowflakes, probly not much but it might be worth a try. Just wanting to know how safe these are (iv seen cars trap in the 130s so probly pretty safe) also wanting to know what kind of tire i need to buy becuase i know people talk about changing their tires to save weight so i need to know the lightest,....some predictions of what gains this might show ? maybe .001 ? lol

No, no, no!

I see Vettes with these at the track all the time and think "what a cheap ****, drives a Vette but won't buy a safe purpose made racing wheel."

Probably because they don't drag race them all the time.

I think it's a cheap alternative that works, I've seen much worse.

Correct, Thats what they are. 97+ Camaro Wheel (powder coated black)
And they are fairly light too. Not as light as a 15x4 pro star or ?? But still fairly light.
I agree it would match decent.

yeah i weighed the front wheel and it was 27lbs, then i took my snowflake off and weighed it with a skinnie-er tire than stock and it weighed 50 lbs so between the front skinnies im looking at around a 45lb drop ! pretty decent i thought

Between weight and rolling resistance, the swap could be worth .05-.1 in the 1/4.

Oddly enough, I am a cheap **** Corvette racer and I do also run GTO spare wheels (not the tires though) at the track, but me being thrifty has very little to do with why I chose them.
I had a CCW drag pack but actually replaced it with the 'stock C5 rims & GTO spares' combo instead.

Exactly.
It's the tires that are the (potential) issue, not the rims. Keep in mind that those rims were designed to carry a 3800+ pound (with driver) GTO.

I hate mustangs and almost everything to do with them(mostly there owners) but mustang guys have been running skinny spare wheels for years, this isn't a new concept and I wouldn't call it cheeping out. Just being smart and looking to spend money elsewhere on the car.

I been told by a couple of GTO drag racers that they have used the spare with the orginal spare tire with no problems and trapped 125+ with them?

Are they nuts?

we run the M&H tire use this setup on vette. used ZR1 wheels for back and matches pretty well. had all 4 wheels powdercoated black to match. i ground down the GM part number on the wheels and had to enlarge the openeing in center of wheel so it would fit over corvette hub

Cool! These are pretty cool.... a buddy of mine has them on his GTO (he got an extra one for free) and they work really well and are not too bad looking. I have seen more people using them here recently.

Technically, the doughnuts are stronger. It's a radial tire and the m&m racemasters are bias ply. So in reality they are tougher. But they are too short and say so much temporary crap on them that you would probably not pass tech at most tracks. I massaged the lettering off and sandblasted mine. The only lettering I left on the wheel was the Gm logo. Powder coat next with some racemasters. The wheel itself weighs 10lbs by itself. My factory g8 18's weigh 32lbs without tires too. So I'm dropping 22lbs in wheel weight alone. Not sure on total weight savings, still have to mount the racemasters. Hope this helps a little
