Default My first time at the track

So I went out to the track at Bradenton Fl tonight. My first time racing on a track. DA at 7:30pm was ~87, but the night got cooler, so I figure the DA went down also.

Had some decent runs, and had more fun than I've had anywhere in a long time.

My best run of the night was my last run. 13.267 @ 108.14

On my 4th run, my 320 lb friend wanted to ride along with me, that with a poor launch got me a 13.8.

I mixed up my 2nd and 3rd slip. On my 3rd run (numbered 2) I accidentally dropped to 2nd gear just off of my launch. Messed up my run..

Anyway, next time I go, I'd like to be in the 12's with a couple of more mods.

Congratulations on the passes and going to the track for the first time! Looks like you drive a 4th gen camaro? What are your mods so far?

12s are just a good 60ft away for you my friend!

Thanks man.

Ya, I drive a 2000 Z28 A4 with 57,000 miles. Not too many mods though. Full exhaust, no cats, with an electric cutout, Hooker aero chamber, TSP ory, p&p TB, mti clear lid, and a mild street tune....and the "free mods" egr delete blah blah.

I'll have to figure out that pesky 60' then. lol

I have about the same mods you do in my 2002 A4 camaro, and I cut a 1.86 60' with nitto 555 street tires with the stock convertor. On my BFGs I can't get past a 1.99 and it is the same size street tire, so a good tire will help you get into the 12s! How was the track prep?

The track prep seemed great, but I'm a newb to the track though, so my knowledge of track prep is limited. There were people taking care of the water boxes, and sweeping the lanes and all of that.

It felt like my tires were sticking well, but I'm sure a drag radial will help. I have some no name Chinese street tires that I put on for the track, which actually felt really sticky after my runs. I left my Goodyear F1 EMT's at home. I didn't want to put too much wear on em.

You're gettin' the itch to go faster, be careful it's a never ending cycle!! If you want to see 12s in a hurry then loose the front swaybar and borrow some MT DRs, that should help those 60' times and get the ET in the 12s!! Congrats and good luck Larry!

Thanks, my next purchase will be DRs, and I will take the sway bar off before my next runs. I appreciate the tip.

My name's Jeff btw. LOL

How will the handling be on the road and freeway without the front sway bar in?

If you drive normal it will be fine, just don't take sharp curves too fast

Yeah congrats on the runs, good times for first runs. Drag radials help quite a bit, with bolt on power (same as mine) drag radials hook like crazy.

I run my drag wheels all the time so I drive accordingly. I just tighten my shocks up for the street and stay home when it rains!! Also the next time out, take everything out of the car to lighten it including the spare/jack and race with 1/4 tank of gas if possible.
Lighter car = faster car Have Fun!!

Thanks. I had loads of fun.

I took all that out, including the rear seats, and I had 1/4 tank of gas for the track.

I had to stop making runs with 1 hour left because I was too low on gas.

Next time, no sway bar, and hopefully DRs.

Congrats on the pass and having a good time your first time out! Be careful, it is addicting.

That's a pretty good DA to be racing in. To be honest it looks like you are short about 3-4mph shy of where you should be with your mods though.

As others have stated grab a set of DR's and lose a little weight from the car and your times will benefit. You have an A4 and a low mileage car so your 10-Bolt will last a tad long with the sticky tires. As far as the front sway bar, you don't need to disconnect it completely unless you want to lose the weight. I would just disconnect the endlinks before the track in my car and it had the same effect.

Definitely need to get that 60' down, practice different launch techniques etc to see what yields the best results. The best mod you can do to your car right now is a stall, 3600 or 4000 depending on what future mods you plan on down that road. That, coupled with a set of DR's and the car with drop multiple tenths of the 60' and will go mid 12's all day.

Overall very good for your first time out though!

****, I forgot about this thread. lol

Thanks guys.

I'm ordering my converter tomorrow from PTC, 3600-3800 stall. After that, I've got a cam from Tick going in, in a few months.

I've been wanting to upgrade and go faster since I got the car, just never had the time or motivation.

I still have my 72 Camaro sitting in my yard, with the motor on a stand, waiting for me to finish it. I've had that car since 95......lol

Thanks.

I just need the seat time at the track, I'm sure. I think I could break into the 12's with drag radials alone, very very high 12's.

Maybe my tune might be too conservative though.

Either way, I enjoyed the track, and I'll be there as often as I can.

I ran 12.87@107.7 with sway bar still on, street tires and bolt ons no tune.

With a tune I feel I could've went faster.

My mods were damn near the same as yours.

Hooker 1 3/4, Hooker OR/Y, Hooker CB, QTP cutout, SLP Lid, FTRA...no tune, stock stall, stock tires.

What are you launching at? I got my best times with the hear selector in OD and holding RPMs at 900-1100. I cut a 1.999 60 ft.

Rob gave excellent advice. If you don't need your DRs to last a long time go with the Hoosiers, they are the lightest DR you can get. If you want a DR that you can DD on and still hook well go with the Toyo Proxes TQs.

I run them and cut a 1.72 my first time out with my new stall and cam. They have 14k miles on them and I could get anywhere from 2-5k miles on them depending on my driving habits.

I also removed my sway bar completely over a year ago and I could barely tell it was gone except if I really tried to push the car in turns.

Good luck and keep us updated.

Why does removing or disconnecting the front sway bar help the speed and times? Is it because the body can twist more and the tires keep better contact with the road?

I was at the track last weekend and my 2002 Hawk, bone stock, M6, with a full tank of gas and full weight. I was running right at 9 sec in the 1/8th. I was pretty consistently getting between 9.0 and 9.1 sec and 81mph. I didn't feel like I was getting launched well. I was spinning on the start no matter where what rpm I started with.
