Default First time at the track with my new to me camaro

Well a few weeks ago I bought an 01 z28, B4C, it's an ex state trooper car and when it went to auction the officer that drove the car daily, older gentleman in his 60s bought the car and kept it for a weekend driver for him and his wife.

Well I bought it fr him early august and finally took it to the track to get some baseline runs, I wanted to see where the car was before I started playing with it...

So keep in mind the tire on the car are a no name brand all season super hard compound radial. The guy said he wasn't gonna be hot ridding around so he bought these. Lol

Anyway the car is bone stock with 116k on it, auto trans.

I made 5 runs, All between 15.0 and 13.62, launched it too hard for the tires on the 15.0 run lol

On the best run

RT. .169

60' 2.08 Best 60' of the night was 2.079, these tires suck!

330'. 5.860

1/8 8.883 @ 82.57 mph

1000 11.444

1/4 13.627 @103.99

I had a blast running the car, I figured it was gonna be in the 13.6 range

With a better tire on the rear I think a 13.2 - 13.0 is reachable.

Next time I go Im gonna remove the spare and do a few free mods, then see where that gets me.

I'm thinking suspension work will the next thing after that. I'd rather do the suspension right, then start adding more power.

just curious where you run it and what the racing weather was like (DA) ??

its been hot as ***** here to get good times ( mid 80's and muggy) fall racing weather will be here soon though hope you get good weather and good tires and shoot for 12.99 with the stocker.

It was almost 90 degrees and very humid, the air was so thick you could almost see it lol
I ran at Capitol raceway, I think the DA is like 300'

I also looked at the tire size, there 225/60r16. There hard as a rock, I'm guessing like a 500-600 tread rating.

So I'm even happier with my times, since there the same size gm put on the fwd impalas lol.

Your confusing DA with track altitude , if the altitude/elevation ( distance in feet above sea level) is 300' and the temp was 90* and very humid you likely had really bad density altitude ( a relative altitude figure based on inputting temp , humidity , and barometric pressure) likely somewhere close to +3,000 feet. Same track with temps in the 40's and high barometric pressure your DA would be below sea level.

Crofton MD ?? is that the right track ? I googled it and the elevation is only 41 feet if that's your track get some good tires and go on a good weather night this fall and you will be shocked how much quicker your car will run

Yes I got them confused, I've never had it explained to me before.

And yes the track in crofton, I googled Md drsg strip elevation and the site list Capitol at 300'. That seemed really high to me.

I figure maybe 100'. 41' seems more realistic.

I plan on making some more runs in the fall, definatly need a different tire on the car.

I feel like I was driving on snow, the track had a greasy feeling to it.

I could feel the tires struggling for traction around 300'

sounds like a good plan , the cooler air will increase power making traction harder to achieve .

A spare pair of wheels with MickeyThompson ET street or Hoosier Quick Time Pro (QTP) would do the trick. If shopping for a pair of stock Camaro wheels I believe the 10 spoke "snowflake" style that came on the later 4th gens are the lightest- is that whats on your car ? which reminds me ...

Pretty decent run with those crappy tires. I just picked up a 98 auto stone stock 150k. Had some used nt05r's laying around and a buddy gave me a pair of 17in wheels to mount them on. Went 13.50's all night in hot air with the best of 13.53 103.58 with a 60 ft of 2.073. Did have a 60 ft of 2.068. Went 13.20's the next weekend (best 13.21 105.84 60ft 2.023 with with marginally better air, free mods and spare tire delete. Gonna try for 12's with stock lid and good air. You should go a little faster with an 01 with the better intake manifold We run up at Cecil if your ever up that way. good luck!

Good runs, it's always fun to baseline a new car!
