New Stock Internals Record: 10.685 at 122.91!
It's been an expensive and interesting few weeks. Here's the timeline.
December 2007: I get lucky and get registered as a racer at PINKS ALL OUT for both San Antonio (3/8) and Shreveport (3/29)
February 9, 2008: Go the Texas Motorplex for a bit of test and tune. Run 1, shifted 1-3 vs. 1-2, 2-3, botched the run, coasted to something like a 9.68 at 133ish. Run 2, car left good, but about the 1/8th-mile felt a bit lazy, at about 1000' is shuddered, and then, it went BOOM right through the lights.
After a bit under 4-years and no issues, one of the 7/16" ARP rod bolts on #6 piston let go...oil on the slicks, fire out the hood, lots of fun on the big end, but I kept her off the wall. Get out, look under, can't see the hole, yet, but you can tell it's done...at first, it felt like a converter might have ballooned and taken the motor out.
One week later, with the help of my buddies, Crazy Larry H., Bitchin Brad B., Redneck Bob S., Bumper-Draggin' Rob B., and Lil' Scotty J., we pulled the engine and trans out. Later that night, my spare stock LS1, which I had for another project but ended up selling it to GUMP / GIZMO (Daren), but never got it to him, was being stuck up in the car. Lots and lots of cleanup of the engine compartment and underbody, and she was starting to look hole again. The intake manifold took 3-hours alone to clean up all the goo as I had coolant in the car vs. water (not anymore, water with water wetter).
The next weekend (2/24), I went to the local 1/8th-mile track (Redline Raceway), with no dyno time and a guess on the tune...first pass was a 6.97 leaving at idle with me shifting 1-3 again! Came back around and turned the 2-step up to 2200 and went 6.86...turned up to 2700 or so and it went 6.81 then 6.78 all at 99ish. I knew then it had it in her to beat the record, hopefully.
Go forward another week to last Friday (3/1), Bumper-Draggin Rob was going to the Texas Motorplex with me so he could do his NHRA Competition Licensing runs...I could sign as one of the drivers. I took the Firebird down there. For me, my first and only run felt real good...6.77 at 100 in the 1/8th, but it hit the limiter soon after. I had forgotten to turn it up far enough! Oh, well...I coasted through to a 10.91 at 116, so, I knew she was going to fly, but, I did not have my cable with me, so, I helped Rob with all the license runs. Thanks to Jason at LPE for helping me figure it out the next day.
Go forward again to this Friday...I made the decision not to tow to San Antonio to PINKS ALL OUT. So, yesterday, Rob and I went to the Motorplex again to play in the Sunoco Street Shootout. I was just time trialing, but he finished 3rd in the Unlimited Class!
First run, set the 2-step way up to 3700 hoping the cold track would hold...it did not. Came right back around with the car warm, but turned the 2-step down to 2700. She left great!!! The 60' was 1.376, 6.727 at 100.50 with a new SI record of 10.685 at 122.91! Thanks to Ray at Nitrous Outlet for using my camcorder to film it. Yes, I know, I did not have my driver's door shut all the way.

A while later, came back in the same set up with a cooler motor and warmer air...she left the exact same, but did not pull quite as hard to the tune of 10.736 at 122.26. Another dumb moment in the video...I had left my reverse lights switch on...probably the current draw slowed me down.

(By the way, the slips shows today's date, 3/9, but it was yesterday.)
Rundown of the car and combo:
DA on first run was a great -1006', 2nd run was -450'
Raceweight was 3060#...70# lighter than with the big motor with wheelie bars, weight bar, and bigger battery. Car has fully certified cage with extra dash & rocker bars, etc. Thanks to Mike Brink at Brink Racecraft!
Fast 90/90 with 85mm MAF with Kook's 1-7/8"-to-2" stepped headers with 3.5" Burns Stainless mufflers
Rossler T400 with ATI 8" MRT converter
Dynotech MMC driveshaft
Strange brakes and master cylinder
Strange 12-bolt with 4.56's with Hoosier 30x9 radial slicks (old 10.866 record was run with 3.73's on 26" tires).
Stock carpet, steering wheel, console, etc. are in the car.
I'll run it this way at PINKS ALL OUT at the end of the month at Red River Raceway, then, figure out what to do next on the new motor. The crank and heads actually ended up being okay with a bit of clean up. Not sure what will be the new combo this summer.
As was my old record years ago in the 11.2x's was hammered, someone needs to chase this and break it again. That's what is fun and amazing about these engines and these cars! Good luck to all this year. Take care. Dave

However, as you can see from the incremental speed between 1/8th and 1/4 mile, it only picked up 22 mph...it doesn't exactly like pulling above 6000 as the stock motor runs out of breath even with the big headers on it.
For what its worth, for yesterday, I put only 5 quarts of Redline 0W-10 race oil in it (including filter amount) and dropped down to a quart of Redline Shockproof Lightweight gear oil. Plugs were stock gapped at 0.037". I only cared about making a couple of runs in that condition. For PINKS ALL OUT, I will go back to Mobil-1 5w30, stick my big battery back in, add the gear lube back in, and if I have time, stick some old LS6 springs on the motor for durability. I have never been, nor will be, secretive about any of my car combo info. I just go out and play once in a while around my busy family and work schedule and enjoy racing.
Happens every time a benchmark moves. Good luck to all in your race and personal goals for 2008! Take care. Dave

Thanks again to Ray @ Nitrous Outlet for filming me on my 2-door open runs (my rollbar padding moved on me...fixed it) including the first attempt about 4 minutes before the 10.68. I had 3700 in the 2-step and it never got up on the tire and blew them away. Came around, unbuckled, turned the **** from "3" to "2" (for 2700) and ran. Take care. Dave

Awesome Job Dave ! Glad to see someone run a great number with a car that hasn't been tin canned and hole sawed just to get the weight out. Some of these guys go way over board with their weight reductions, but to each their own.
Congrats on your accomplishment, you have definatly lowered the bar in the SI game, and I bet people will have a hard time matching or even coming close to what you have done at your raceweight of 3070lbs !
Three words "Simply Frickin Amazing"

My only advice to guys getting started or not too far along is to prioritize what money is spent for. Let's say you've got $400 to spend and you've done all the normal stuff. Rather than do lightweight carpet and two fancy race seats, buy two cheap ones (or gut your stockers) and get, for instance, an ATI 60% underdrive with an aluminum hub...that's 5.5#'s right on the crank nose plus you save the parasitic losses, too! Not that the seats and carpet aren't good things to do, but 5.5#'s off the crank nose helps more and more the faster you spin the motor. Take care. Dave

As per the post, next time she'll be out is PINKS ALL OUT at Red River Raceway at the end of the month. A number of us will be there as racers including Torkman15 all the way from mid-Michigan! Come on by in the pits. Take care. Dave

awesome post and awesome that you detailed every bit. congrats and yes, its crazy what these motors and chassis can do when you put a little thought into them!
RU - tell me, inst it kinda fun to have a ZERO maintence stock motor and go fast? of course your big time moded big motor is much faster and a blast on the big end. but there has to be a fun factor knowing its a nothing cheapo motor?
again congrats
