Default gear for 1/8 mile A3

5200 stall and th350
30" tire running a 4.33 gear right now.
looking to step up to a 4.86 or a 5.00.
is that going to be too much gear with the 3spd?
car works good right now, just looking for some more et.

4.56 would be max imho, your overall ratio would be too great and hooking it would be an issue. You would be into a convertor change as well to effectively use the 5.xx gears, the "loading" of the convertor changes quite a bit and you won't be getting launch stall numbers like your used to.

dont you love it when a guy waits 3 plus years to post about it???

ive had a 4.22, and now ive settled into a 4.71. car has been its fastest times with the 4.22, but i dont think my stall is optimal for the 4.71.
my 60ft has not improveed, and my 330 time is down with the 4.71 that i currently have. tells me the converter needs some help, or im slipping the tires with the numerically higher gear. will be doing some testing as the weather cools down. car is setup for index right now, so it doesnt matter how fast it is.

I didn't, lol! I posted that as soon as I read it! That is what the search feature is for I thought.

Anyway, thanks for the follow-up as it may help others searching for help!

The reason I was wanting to know actually is I just got a killer deal on a 9" Nodular Third Member with a Locker and 4.86 gears for $300 and I was wondering if that would be tooooooo much for my car. It cant hurt to try it and see. I was just looking for others with experience with a Low Rear Gear and your thread was one I came across.

My car is really too loud for the street and I have enough other vehicles to get me around so I am just going to make this one a dedicated track car with 95% of the time being on an 1/8th mile.

The search is sort of a nightmare because you have to phrase everything right and I never seem to find an answer myself! Usually a bunch of dead ends, lol!
