Default Quick t-top delete question

Hey guys, I searched around for a while but couldn't find anything. I see my t-tops together weigh 27lbs. Could I make my own faux t -tops out of foam board or will I not be able to race if I have foam inserts instead of t-tops? I would paint the foam inserts gloss black which would weigh about 2 lbs together. I've heard you can't race with your t-tops off, (I wouldn't want to because the wind drag from it would kill my time) but thats why I'm thinking they won't allow the foam inserts if they won't allow you to race with your t-tops off.

Is this a serious post? Not only would you not make it through tech, but they would come flying out first pass.

LOL, yeah I'm serious. I guess you guys are right, I wouldn't make it through tech. And I would make bracing for the foam tops so they couldn't fly out if I did it, I wouldn't just place them on top. Guess I'll have to scratch my idea

I'll just have to prey for a 12.999999 thanks guys!

If anything make them out of fiberglass like most hoods, strong and lightweight. OR you can get some cheap carpet from pep boys and swap out your stock carpet to save 30lbs..

I managed to cut exactly 100lbs from my car, which I've been reading is supposedly 1 car length or basically a 10th in the quarter.

Weighed everything last night with a bath scale...

Passenger seat - 32lbs
Spare Tire/jack - 36lbs
Back seat - 26lbs
back plastic with speakers and cover thingy - 6lbs

I also just descreened my maf and cut my egr tube that blocks my intake. Seriously, have you guys with EGR looked through your throttle body into the intake and seen how much the egr tube blocks the intake. It looks like this...

Seriously, why would they make a giant tube block the intake? LOL

Lots of people have made fiberglass and carbon fiber replacements. Just work on a mechanism to lock them in and you are ok.

Hmmm, I like the idea but I'd rather not have those brackets hanging off the front like that guys....

I was thinking about if there was a way to remove the glass and replace it with fiberglass. You wouldn't save as much weight as a complete fiberglass piece but you could still use the factory latches and it would look stock.

Thanks for the pics!

or yes use the stock glass to copy some fiberglass and then put the stock molding and weather seals around it???

I've got a buddy that swears up and down he can make one out of carbon fiber. I'm just looking for a spare T-top he can mess with.

I had someone that said they could do it too... I got 2 spare t tops from a junkyard, gave them to him and he's been trying for a year to get it right. Hasn't had them work yet.

About once every 3 to 5 months he calls me, stops by with another attempt, and it either doesn't fit, or like the last ones, they fit, but they werent' shaped right and looked like *** with 2 twisted flat pieces of mat'l

Just convert the car to a hardtop, that's what I am probably going to do.

I'm OK with my T-Tops. I can find weight in other places. My next serious weight reduction mod will be rear speed glass. I've had my eye on that for a while, but it would be a bitch to ship up here. Luckily I'm moving in November.

I have the front and rear speedglass sitting here, along with a formula hatch and the sloped ws6 hood.

Next parts to buy: racecraft front end from madman, along with the lw spindles, the whole damn race setup they came out with. There goes 3500 bucks. Hopefully my current brakes and shocks will recover some of that.

I hear ya. It's never ending. I'm still rolling on stock brakes, and all that other heavy stuff. I just don't want to limit myself with the glass yet until I find out where I'm moving to in November. I want to race in a 275 class of some sort, and a few require full glass.

I'm going the hardtop route also. This fixes several issues for me: It removes unneeded weight from a feature I never use, stops the sun from cooking the inside of the car, stops the rain from filling up the rear floor pans, and replaces the POS bubbling sail panel. I'm getting the roof panel, door seals, headliner, and side rails to weld onto my car for 150 bucks at a scrap yard.
