That sounds rahter high. I bet it's more like 100 passes or less. Even if you are racing full time 500 passes is a lot if you ask me...

Yeah, info I have, is that you should be looking at it every 150 to 200 tops... about the same interval's for rear end gears, rod bearings, valve springs, etc.

At 2,000hp or near it 150-200 passes is pretty much when everything needs a refresh........ sooner for springs and rods depending on what you have.

I know there are some 2,000hp is cars that go about two seasons with just valve spring changes but those are cars that are not competitavly raced.



On a side not I know Tim Lynch was or still is runing a 400 based tranny and everyone knows how fast he is...... Proline told me that unless you like changing rear gears for 1/8th mile and 1/4 mile to go with the 400.

I have an ATI TH400 in my car..... granted i'm only making like 1000hp give or take but I have about 100 passes in my car all on the transbrake and this thing holds up like a champ. And I bought their street/strip version that doesn't have all the bells and whistles.. I think it's rated at like 900hp....

I also run their fuel/blown series of converter... great converter and i've never blown thru it all all... cars been on a 400 shot and converter loved it...

I have a hughes Th400, best that they build in my car, with an Ultimate converter concepts converter, both have worked great so far, but I'm at a measley 625ish at the crank.


The Th400 vs glide debate, I can ask 50 guys that have been racing for a long time with big power stuff (I'd call big power over 1000 hp, that's big to me anyway) and you will get a 50/50 call.

At less then 1000 hp with anything weighing more then 3200 I don't think the glide will work as good.

Get a car to 2900, even at my power it would probably work, maybe better. Make 1200 at 2900 lbs, glide all day.

Th400 for 1/8th and 1/4 car, I can see that making sense, but I'd bet with 3200 hp you'd be better off just changing the gears and running the glide for consistancy.

are you saying replace the sleeved aluminum drum every 100 to 150 passes , or replace the all aluminum drum every 100 to 150 passes?

Replace an all alum drum every 150 to 200 passes depending on the condition/wear. A sleeved alum drum, will last as long as a steel drum will since the clutches are all riding on the steel sleeve.

well we both bit the bullet and went with rossler , carl ( the owner) was very helpfull and took his time answering all our questions

they both should be ready to ship in a week or so .

Good choice. Just about anyone can build a TH400. It's the simplest trans out there. The PRO MOD sprag is the expensive part.

Before my last build went up in smoke due to a lot of things coming up it was going to be a 1,500-low 2,000hp (never got it all figured out) car at well under 3,000 pounds and I was still being told by some of the best guys and builders out there that the 2.10 400 was going to be better just because if I ran 1/8th I would not have to swap out rear gears........ at that weight and power I think more or less it boils down to a little bit of weight savings with the glide or if you don't want to do rear gear swaps.....

I talked to Carl a few years ago about a tranny for Supra I was helping work on and come to find out the owner had just got off the phone with Carl and Carl just laughed a little and did not mind.......... Ill remember that..... the next tranny I need built will come from him........

You would start in second gear on a TH400 for 1/4 mile but use 1rst for the 1/8th, why? You think you will get a better 60' and 1/8th ET by using 1rst in the 1/8th but it won't help in the 1/4, or did I read that wrong?

I won't be swapping gears and I will be running a 2 speed glide so just trying to see the points of swapping, will I get a better 60'? NO! will I get a better 1/8th mile ET/MPH, IDK? Of course we are still talking about a high to mid 7 sec car.
