Default The low-down on Drag Wheels - SFI vs. non-SFI

Lots of guys run Prostars or Summit Stars and the like but they are not SFI approved from what I've read. Very few wheels, like the Billet Specialties, are actually SFI 15.1 approved for racing.

I'm looking to compile a list of all the wheels that guys on here are running and whether or not the are SFI approved...both for my research and for people in the future. I will edit this post for easy reading once we get some concrete answers.

I believe that SFI approved wheels are required at 9.99 ET and faster. Can someone clarify that? I can't seem to find that in the NHRA or IHRA rule book.

SFI APPROVED WHEELS
  • Billet Specialties Street Lite
  • Weld Magnums
  • Champion
  • American Racing Trakstars

NON-SFI APPROVED WHEELS
  • Weld Prostars
  • Bogarts
  • Summit/Jegs Stars
  • Race Star Industries

Bogarts may not be SFI approved but plenty of fast cars have them. Who is actually looking and what speed is the SFI approval required.

That's what I'm looking to clarify as well...I believe its 9.99 ET. As far as who's looking, I personally would rather have the approved stuff rather than getting turned away when someone decides to check, especially at a big event.

American Racing Trakstars...SFI

Just looked at my rulebook...they aren't required per the rulebook for ET racing (7.50 and slower) (no requirement for even advancd ET which is 7.49 or faster).
They are required for Top Sportsman though which is an advanced ET class

I have never seen a requirment for SFI approval on the wheel for anything other then the big boy classes, stuff that's well into the 200+ mph stuff. I'm not even sure about that, I know 9, 8 and as fireball stated 7 second stuff doesn't require it.

I'm going with a set of sander engineering wheels this time around.... I'm not sure if they're approved or not, but for what I want to do I'm 100% sure they're fine.

If we can agree that SFI approved wheels are not needed until insane speeds, then we can let this thread die and I can find less expensive wheels for my build

Not to mention... what does SFI really mean?

Havent a few wheels from one of the named manufactures of SFI stuff come apart?

That's not the point. It's about building a car to spec. I just didn't want to get to a national event and find out I can't race because I don't have the approved wheels for my class. That'd be stupid.

Its already been answered - only a few of the advanced ET classes require SFI approved wheels. Classes like TS, PM, PS,etc

My point brings back the whole Impact Racing debacle... just because something is SFI approved does not mean it cant fail - shop accordingly

The problem with this statement is that Impact wasn't following the SFI procedure. I have seen SFI wheels that failed, and non SFI wheels fail, when you drive a wheel that is "For race use only" on the street **** will happen.

Mine is certified to run 8.50 with Weld Pro Stars on the front, Bogarts on the back. Non-issue for slow guys like most of us.
