Default Those With Removed Bump Stops?

For those of you who have removed the factory rear bump stops on your 4th gen f-body, have you installed bump stops on your drag shocks? If so, what size in height did you install? Or, are you using something else or nothing at all?

Thanks,
Jim

I'm in the planning stages of a drag build and was thinking about this the other night. The big drawback I am seeing is with using an aluminum body shock such as a Strange or Afco. They might crush if they take a hard hit...that is if it sees any street time.

I also thought about putting a bumper inside the spring (axle side mounted) and allow enough extension to contact the upper spring mount on the frame rail.

I've seen plenty of people just omit them, but they may be trailored drag only cars.

Yup, I cut out the entire bump stop area to fit 28x10.5 slicks. I don't own a trailer either.

I have new Strange DAs waiting to be installed. I can imagine if they were to bottom out, damage would most definetly occur. Therefore, I was thinking of sliding one stop on each shock before mounting them at the top. Just wasn't sure what height/thickness.

qa1s and other aftermarket on several cars, without stops never had one problem. But a buddy of mine with a s60 swears he needs bumpstops in his car. He says he will hit without them, but has never taken them off and I say he needs them off. Thats why he cant hook and always unloads.

I have an M9 narrowed 1" each side with no bump stops & QA1s. I've driven it over 1000 miles on the street but only made one 9 sec pass so far & haven't had a problem yet.

Does it make sense to remove them on a weekend warrior that occasionally makes single digit passes at the track?

I guess you have the coilovers?

I dont know if the body is the same between the shock and the coilover. I would just be concerned about the shock body deforming or crushing if its impacted from a jounce bumper.

No coilovers, just bolt in Afco's

They have a jounce that fits on the shaft so you cannot bottom the shock out

Do you happen to know the height (top to bottom) your jounce bump stops are?

The rear Afco jounce bs's are about 2.25" long. I also have the bolt-on Afco's in the rear with no factory bumps and the car is lowered quite a bit. I had to trim the jounce bump stops to keep from hitting them during street driving. Other suspension components would probably hit before the shock completely bottoms out though, ie the torque arm hitting the tunnel etc.... If your car is slightly lowered or stock height, I wouldn't even worry about it.

U could throw in a set of in spring airbags and air them them up a bit for street driving if you're that concerned with bottoming out.
