Default Advise needed - A bigger stall or a bigger shot??

My 60' is pretty much limited by my stall size. So I was going to send in my converter and get it restalled to a 4000-4200, and bump my shot up to a 200 hit. But a couple of my buddies told me that might be a bad idea and cause the car to blow through the converter. Right now I have a 3600 PI vigilante stall through a built 4L60E and 3:90 gears. I'm trying like hell to get into the 1.3x's for my 60' So now I'm torn between which one to do, up the shot or get a bigger stall, or both. I know if I up the shot it will cause my converter to flash higher, just not sure by how much. Which one would benefit me the best, or could I get away with both? My times are in my sig, if you need to know any other info let me know. Thanks guys!

I've run 6.80@98-99 on motor with a 3600 Vig and 4.10's. Also, I've been cutting in the 1.45's-1.47's and like you I've been limited by my stall size. When I called a couple of converter companies I was told that if I got a 4000+ I would need to remain NA and if I decided to spray the car it would more than likely blow through the converter. They also stated that the 3600 would be ideal for a 150+ if I decided so spray the car. I guess in the end from what I understood is it would either run optimal on motor or run optimal on nitrous and I needed to choose which one I wanted. In the end, I came across a different trans (TH350) and decided to remain NA. Greg@FTI got me into an 8" 5000 stall which I still haven't had the chance to try out but he said it should shoot me out of the 1.4's. I recommend giving him a call and telling him your situation because he helped me when I thought I was going to remain with the 4L60E. I would probably try out the bigger hit and see how the converter acts because it will be a lot easier than getting the converter loosened and finding out.

FTI is who you need to contact. He went me a 8" 5000 for my th400 with the intent of nitrous(200 or less). On a 150 shot he said it would only flash to 5500 and he nailed it right on the head. I havnt launched the car yet but I did lay into it from about 3500rpms and and as promised went to around 5500 and pulled like a sum bitch. Idk if it's the difference between a lock up converter and non lock up. But needing a tight converter for small shots of nitrous seems to be a myth. Track times will tell though I guess. As for the vig converter, your best off contacting them and seeing what they say, but I do know of one vig4000 with nitrous and it dosnt blow through

Yeah I will give them a call to see what they say. I know a lot of people say that 4000+ w/nitrous will just blow through, but I have seen a couple guys with 4k+ stalls spray and get it done. One of which just set the fastest stock cube nitrous record. I would love to get a new stall from FTI or Yank even, but thats about another grand, and it will only cost 250 to get my vig restalled. But I'll give them a call, and it would be cheaper to up the shot and see how the stall reacts. I'm just looking from some input from guys that have been there and that have been doing this a while. This is the fastest car I have had and its been a huge learning experience so far.

I know people running under 4,000s... but most of my buddies run 4000s... I THINK thats what my new ATI is... its just a converter built for my car so I have no clue... never was givin a stall speed from rosler when it was setup. I didnt tell em I was gunna hit it with a 250-300, I told em I was gunna go w/ a 100-150 so it'll be a little looser than they would set it up normally for a little better NA performance.

Call FTI. For the engine that I have listed for sale in my sig, I had intended to put a 250 hit to that and Greg still wanted to build me a 6000 to 6200 rpm 8 inch converter for it... he told me that would work great for about 1000 hp, which I figure was a close # at the crank to what it would be making....

Aim was to get a 2800 lb f body, to 8.45 to 8.50 with that motor, and looks to be doable.

I talked to PI today and they told me they would be able to restall my converter to a 4-4200 stall with a 150 and it wouldnt blow though, and they said it should be fine with a 200 hit. But they suggested they would raise the stall and leave the 150 shot. I could just raise the shot, but they dont really know what the converter would flash to. I'm still torn between which way to go, or possibly both. Its so damn hot out that I'm not going back to the track for about a month when the local track starts doing test-n-tunes on friday nights instead of middle of the day sundays.

Yea, Greg deffinently will send you a ***** to the walls converter lmao! But from street testing mine and doubts were quickly silenced, but I think your best bet would be just hit it with the 200, then restall if needed

changing the shot is free if you have the jets... might as well give it a try. you may just be happy with it
