Default Anyone made their rims skinnier?

I'm trying to make the ultimate sleeper/street car. I have a spare set of ZR1's sitting in my garage and I was thinking about getting some of the middle cut out and changing the 9.5" width to something like a 4"-5". This would make the rims somewhat lighter but keep the stock appearance. This may raise a few problems, such as backspacing and brake clearance. Anyone know if this would even work if I did some caliper grinding? Do they make a 17" tire that skinny? Thanks in advance.

We took a pair of 16x8 wheels from a 93 Z-28, narrowed them 2.5", and used a 215x60x16 tire for a slightly "skinnier" look. When they were cut/welded back together, the severe heat melted the factory clear powder coating off and had to be stripped and recoated afterwards.

How much less did they end up weighing? I'm guessing the chrome wouldn't have the same reaction as the clear coat (I hope).

i think the chrome would actually end up being worse. you may end up with it flaking off or having it turn blue from the heat and would give it a weird look to it.

your best bet is to just sand blast em both and have em rechromed or powdercoated.

Jay did you sell those rims to Rich Andrews? He used to have a set of stock narrowed fronts a few years ago.

Eric Vaughn (626-358-6413) did mine a few years ago. I have since sold them. He does great work. They looked cool but were heavy. I had them taken down to 5.5" wide. I think the tire was a 275 Firehawk from Tirerack.com. Attched is a picture. It's a scan so it is a little distorted.
You will need to send him 4 rims to get back 2.

Do you know how much less they weighed after the work? I would go w/ something smaller than a 275, if they make something smaller for a 17" rim.

The tire was a 195, Sorry head was in my ***. I don't remember what they weighed but I do remember that they were slightly heavier than the rear stock rim with the ET street on it.

So your stock rim w/ an ET Street weighed LESS than your skinnier stock rim w/ a 195 radial? Hmm, guess it doesn't cut too much weight.

You wont pick up much. I did this before we could find front runners to clear our brakes. It wasn't cheap either.
