Can I put real tires on my spare tire rim and use it as a skinny?

I know the spare tire should not be used as a skinny, but their is nothing wrong with the wheel, correct? I know its not as light as a Weld, but it would be better then my heavy 255-50-16 Yokohamas on the front. I am thinking about using the spare tire wheel and putting a streetable tire on it, can I do that?

Good luck on finding a 'real' tire that will fit it. Isn't the wheel 16"? It would have to be 14" or 15" for you to get a 'real' skinny tire for it.

About every 6 months this idea comes up.
a) The spare tire rim is not light at all
b) It looks totally ghetto, track officals don't allow it
c) It's probably not very safe
Just buy the real rims for $200.

A V6 buddy of mine was hot on this idea.
We could not find tire that would fit those rims.
I gave him my spare.
Car did not look good with the dinky spares up front LOL.

Bob,
That would be great, but won't I have clearance issues? I think I am gonna have to break down and get skinnies. I have a feeing thats one of the reasons my car runs 90 MPH in the 1/8th and only 111 MPH in the 1/4. The Yokohamas run BIG as it is, so my 255-50-16s are HUGE heavy tires. I know these tires are about 4 more pounds a piece then a 245-50-16 SZ50, so thats 8 more pounds of unsprung weight, which is equalivalent to 24 extra pounds. 24 extra pounds, plus all that added rolling resistance could easily cost me 1 MPH on the big end, I would think?

I think skinnies will get you 1mph, but the real issue here is probably your gearing. What rpm are you shifting in to 3rd at?

I think Tom's car got 1.5-2 tenths and 2 mph with my skinnys. Clearance won't be an issue since I have the 5/16" spacers. Give me a little waring and I'll be there

I bet if you'd get in to 3rd sooner you'd see more MPH, but gear is really what you need. You need to try and hit the traps at your power peak (around 6200rpm).

Are the stock wheel studs and lug nuts okay to use with skinnies? I read somewhere about some long-shank lugs..

Tom,
I'll use one and you can use one :-)
Actually, skinnies just moved to the top of my 'to get' list. Bob, I will send you mail in a few minutes....
Terry,
I know I could use more gear, but I really like the 3.23s. I drive the car too much to have 3.73s. Besides their might be a blue bottle somewhere in the spring....:-)
