Default should I do it?

Quick question ls1 tech FAM. I have a 2000 z28 a4 with 221,xxx miles on it (JUST GOT HER IN SEPTEMBER) that I will be parking as soon as the roads get bad here in Dallas texas. Well I wanted to know if you guys think I should use my stock heads and bottom end to try and get 450-500hp out of it? It will be my daily so yes I want AC. I will start by pulling the motor and regasket everything due to minor leaks and go from there. Not in a rush but summer 2016 would be nice.

This will be my first performance build so any parts combo input would be nice.

Do we think you should? I don't speak for everyone, but my short answer: no.
Can you? Yes. Would it be that big a risk/difficult? Probably not, depending on how you do it. Should you? No. Should you: install a forged rotating assembly and some high flow heads along with a big, properly matched cam? Why not?

Stock bottom freshened, TSP 228r cam, BTR springs, 243 heads, ls6 intake, ported throttle body, TSP 1 7/8" long tubes with off road y or true duals, 3000 stall converter, slp lid, and most importantly, a Mighty Mouse solutions pvc catch can. This will get you moving really good. O and a custom tune and ls7 lifters.

Oh OK, just wondering what would be my best solution and not have to worry about something breaking on me and sending the whole build down the drain sooner than expected.

I was wanting to do cam kit, intake, exhaust, stall, and drag radials with a custom tune on stock heads and block but don't know what to go with and if I did what's the best way to assure my stock parts will hold???

Bearings and rings would be a start. LS parts are easy to find. You will be hard pressed to get that kind of hp out of those 241 heads. Also with over 200k on the clock, those lifters are not going to like the new found lift and rpm from the cam.

Yea dude the lifters are part of my plan with everything else. Guess I'll just pull the motor and freshen everything up as well. How much can stock heads handle???

it's not a matter of how much they can handle.. They just can't flow enough for the power you want..

400-420 hp is easily doable with a nice mid 230's cam and some 243 heads with at least a valve job and a little milling to bump up compression and some long tube headers/exhaust..

You also need supporting mods that go with any head/cam swap

To make 450-500 will almost cost triple the price of the above, meaning aftermarket heads or CNC ported 243 heads, fast 102 intake, 1 7/8 headers, true dual exhaust, max effort cam.. List goes on

Huge diff in price to go from 400 hp to 450-500 hp on the ls1 engine.

425hp sounds better, don't want something crazy now that I really think about it and keep reading. Just wana kick some SRT *** here and there drag a pony back to his table. How much would a wet 100 shot add to all this?

At 220k I think I would be more worried about the auto trans if it has never been gone through than the motor. 100 shot will get you to around the 400 hp number without any thing else. Just need to figure out what times you want to run and put parts together for that. Saving up for built motor and drive train is not a bad idea.

I would look for a 6.0 bottom end with decent miles and build it all up with time and onces it's done drop it in then sell your long block to get some money back just a thought

That's what I'm thinking, here in Dallas 6.0s are everywhere so it wouldn't be that hard to come across one. Just not sure what would be the best parts to combine to get a reliable daily driver with some nutz
