anybody mod their factory rack to manual aka pull apart and take seals out?
So i have my factory power rack out and want to tear it apart and pull the seals out since iv heard they turn better de-sealed and wondering if any of you guys completely pulled one apart and done this. From my quick search iv done i cant find any pics and they are pretty vague, however one article mentioned about setting the gears correctly and setting preload on the outer cap? Does anybody have some info on this or links?
p.s. i dont want a full manual rack as i like the tighter gear ratio on a factory rack and it works just fine for me, just doing this to make it a little nicer and im board, lol.

Yea I just got after it and figured it out, pretty easy now that I know how to do it, lol. I drove mine around the driveway and it's way nicer to turn! Even in the vise it would create a air pocket half way through the turn and you would fight it, now it's literally a manual rack and "easy" with the gear ratio in it.

I had a manual converted rack in my car from Rack Doctor, it wasn't very easy to steer and it broke. So I swap it a stock power rack and left it all open. Steers great, much nicer that the converted rack ever did.

I had all my ports open but it still created air pockets, I didn't get that part, lol. Converting a power rack is just removing a seal and cutting away part or all of the seal housing. It doesn't make it any weaker so I don't know how yours would've broke unless it was put back together wrong.

Correct, I plugged the 4 holes on the steering shaft housing and cut off and welded shut the 2 on the main body. I can prob take it apart in 5 mins, takes longer to take off the car then it does to mod it, lol.
Put the rack in a vise, unscrew the 2 putter tie rods off the main rack, unbolt and remove the steering shaft that goes into the housing then a c-clip and pull out.

So basically this wouldn't be bad to street drive for a weekend warrior you say? Be a nice little weight reduction too loosing the pump, lines, and cooler I have for mine.

Thanks for the write up, sounds like I have a something else to do the next few weeks while im waiting on a few other things to come in. Any weight reduction helps plus one less accessory for the motor to turn. Shooting for 9's NA ls7/t56.

I'm planning on doing this to a v6 rack and putting it in my 02 ws6. Just wondering what width tires are you guys running up front. I've got some 245 fronts on 8 inch wheels. Hoping it won't be to tough to steer.
