Default Why Carlsbad Sucks!

I drove (2hrs) out to Carlsbad today to test my new TP4400 - 28x10.5x15 ET Drag combo. I had my hals set at 2 in the front, tire pressure at ~11-12psi, did good burn outs all runs. The car has a decent amount of weight off the front (!bumper, dynabatt) and gets good weight transfer.

First run I left around 2000rpm, mostly hooked (1.63 60' time), and ran an 11.39@119.

Second run I left around 2600rpm, ran a 1.76 60' time, let off.

Third run I left around 2400rpm, ran a 1.80 60' time, let off.

Fourth run I left around 2200rpm, ran a 1.73 60' time, decided to stay in it, car wouldn't shift in to 3rd (was bouncing off 7200rpm rev limit), let off.

Drove 2hrs home.

I can't imagine anyone else races at a track where you can spin 28" slicks @11psi with an 11 second car. Carlsbad sucks!

My local track in Lubbock sat at 3,200', and my best 60' there was a 1.70. This was launching on nitrous with the 383! The track that I learned to race at way back when netted high 1.7 60' times w/ the stroker and N2O. That's why I laugh when guys start griping about Texas Motorplex. Hell, we would drive 350 miles each way just to race at Texas Motorplex!

And you thought I was kidding when I said I was coming out of the hole 3/4 throttle. This convertor is hopeless at Carlsbad! I'm glad I don't have to run there anymore. Try it with 26" ET Streets with only 8.4" tread width.

It's getting close enough to Bakersfield (4/13) that you better put some ET Streets on and practice! But you better go to LACR.

Forget about catching me until then.

Do you think the 28" tires hurt your topend ie. MPH etc? I kind of expected you to pick up MPH from the TP4400. You might be finishing well under your HP peak with that MMS229 cam.

I made an interesting observation from my runs the last couple weeks. Even when I MPH'd better at the 1/8 (usually with a better time as well) I wouldn't gain much if anything on the big end(compared to slower 1/8 & MPH). I think I'm well past my power peak going through the traps. I was running 96 to 97 MPH at the 1/8th at Sacramento, but still only reaching 121.XX on average. I think with my current setup, 27" tires might actually optimize MY setup and help my topend. And of course increase contact patch for better 60's. FWIW, I gained much more between the 1/8 & 1/4 marks at Carlsbad vs. Sacramento. It makes me wonder if Carlsbad is downhill.

If you ever can hook up at Carlsbad though, you'll fly. Just catch it on the right day....if there is one. Or come on up to Sacramento and we'll set some new bests.

sometimes ya gotta drive a lil far to get the best

sux to hear bout Carlsbad though. Thats a good size drive for ya, and for you to drive all that way to cut 1.7's is well, pretty crappy.

oh well, give it a go next week

dont tell yank bout the 1.7's your cuttin with that TP-4400, it'll make them look bad

Those used slicks you got may very well be worn out, and the pressure seems too low to me. When you go down that low on a tire that size, the tread in the middle can have a tendancy to cup, and the tire will also deform itself in strange ways.

I have some pictures of my car when I would experiment with tire pressure, and you swear the tire was square instead of round in some of them.

Try 14-16psi hot, and have someone watch from behind to see if the tire is doing anything strange...

I don't think so, I picked up about 1mph vs my ST3800 times unlocked. 28" slicks are also going to suck up a bit more power with no other changes.

I used to average 118.75 unlocked before, my average of the 3-4 runs with the TP4400 I am at 119.75 unlocked. When I get the launch down I'll try locking it up, I figure I'll see 122mph that way.

With this stall I bet I could swap in 3.23 gears and still run 11.3/118mph unlocked. It has really good shift extension (~5700rpm).

Terry, i am going to C-SPIN ON Sat and we are bringing a gallon of VHT.Going to see if your old converter and a retune will get me an 11.70. Come on down and we will VHT the **** out of that place, maybe some 6000 rpm 3rd gear burnouts across the line to lay down some rubber.

We are trying to find a someone to be our VHT guy. Makes it a lot easier having someone to man the vht for everyone.

Terry have you tried going on Sunday's for the SAFE racing events. I went there and was able to cut a 1.91 60' with BFG drags, bolt on's, and 4.10's. This doesn't happen to often at C-Bad, but the track prep was muich better than the usual nil.

Pardon my ignorance about this track, but have youguys spoke to the mgnt. about the problem? Is the launch pad concrete? For christs sake why should you have to bring your own VHT?Do you have any racer reps at the track? Bombard them with E-mails or something! I feel for ya man.

the track owners dont really do much to aid in the traction dept, hell they wont even cut or kill the weeds that grow thru the cracks on the track, and that aint no joke!

Terry its a shame because when I lived in California in the late 60's Carlsbad and Orange County were two of the best strips in the country. I saw Top Fuelers,Funny cars and Pro stockers run there. Down here in South Louisiana we now have a new track that opened last Oct. It has 660ft lazer leveled concrete launchpad. And the rest of the track is very smooth. The starting line is always preped. Last Friday night a guy broke his rearend and that made number 60 since they opened. My car is a low horsepower na stockhead Lt1 with a vig3200. Last weekend I ran 11.66 114.62 with a 1.51!!! shortime. Take a weeks vacation and come on down here in the cool weather and we'll get you a 10 sec slip. Frank95z

Terry I bet the slick was deforming as well.
Go with 15-17psi in them next time and heat the bejesus out of them. 28's are more prone to distortion than the 26's. I think you have a lot more in it.
Cheers,
Chris
