Default New Best, but need some advice of experts.

Last night I ran several new bests at Wall Dragway in San Angelo. The DA was 3410.
The car is a 98 SS
My mods are:
FTRA, Direct flow lid, ported maf ends(soon to be removed), slp smooth bellows, ASP crank pulley
MTI C2 cam, manley springs, valvetrain goodies
Hooker headers, mufflex Y, no muffler, single 4" out.
Vig 3200, transgo shift kit, poly trans mount.
LS1Edit tuning by me.
Centerline convo pro's with 26x8.5x15 ET drags
Stock suspension.
No skinnies, stock TB, stock intake, stock gears(3.23)
Weight removal:
!rear seatback and seat belts
!passenger seat
!spare and jack

Here are a few of my runs:
.766 ~_ ~ .714 ~_~ .938
1.716 ~_ ~ 1.735 ~_~ 1.777
7.759 ~_ ~ 7.803 ~_~ 7.827
89.56 ~_ ~ 89.22 ~_~ 89.43
10.144 ~_ ~ 10.197 ~_~ 10.224
12.177 ~_ ~ 12.239 ~_~ 12.266
110.76 ~_ ~ 110.29 ~_~ 110.13

The car pulls hard off the line, but kinda calms down up top. I noticed that on some shifts I drop to 4600RPM's.
The car never has had very high trap speeds, what could cause this upper end dificientcy(sp?)?
Also, I get about 2* KR off the line only. My y-pipe bangs, but doesn't seem to cause KR any other time.

And finally, my next mod is gonna be a tranny cooler, then possibly some dyno tuning, what should I do after that?

I can't really reply to any of your questions unfortunately since I'm only a weekend drag racer. Sorry about that, but I'd like to make a few comments.

First of all, nice times! The first thing that strikes me is your 60'. 1.7's seem a little high for all of your mods & ET Drags. I wonder how much you could shave of there. I'm sure the 3.23's are a limiting factor here. How hard are you launching?

Secondly, I think your right about your lack of top end power. Even though you have an A4, I would think 115-116mph would be achievable. Hell, I'm only running 13.2 and I'm trapping 106mph. The low traps speeds could be because of the DA you're running at. That's just a guess.

Keep screwing around with the car. 11's seem to be right around the corner. I'm sure a little spray will get your mph up.

I see several things that need to be delt with.
#1 get rid of those MAF ends because they will kill your line preassure in the tranny and probably giving you some KR.

#2 your tire and gear combo are good for a mild bolt on car but not for a cam car. The reason the car pulls hard down low is that the gearing is tall and does not stress the tires and with the 8.5 Drags they will stick good but to a certain point. The reason the car is calming down up top is because the upshift is falling to far down and out of the power band. You need a bigger converter or you can do like me (money issues) and just go with lower gear ratio such as 3.73s or 4.11s but then you will need a bigger tire because the car will hit alot harder off the line. 3.73s will go good with a 26x9 Hoosier Drag or a ET Street. 4.11s will need something in the 26x10 range because the 4.11s will pull about 300 rpms higher across the traps and the bigger tire will swell and keep it from taping the rev limiter going across the traps. My upshift falls to 5000 rpms with the 3.73s/10.5 ET Street/Vigilante 3200 but only pulls to 6100 across the traps (i want 6400 across the traps). Maybe i gave you a little insight on your questions.

Again, congrats on the new best. 12.1's are good for Wall. I've made many passes there. Most people don't believe that it is in the middle of a cotton field. Scott nailed it on the head. I would swap back to a set of stock MAF ends. They will flow enough air. The power from them comes from added timing and a leaner a/f ratio. Since you have LS1 Edit, you can adjust that manually. You're also losing way too much on the shift extensions. If you run 3.73's with the Vig 3200, you'll drop to 5,000 on the shifts. That's where mine were. After swapping out to the PT4400, I now only drop to 5,700 on the shifts! That makes a HUGE difference when you need to keep the engine higher up in the power band w/ a cam. Also as Scott mentioned, steeper gears and a fatter converter are going to hit a lot harder off of the line. If I ran at Idalou on a regular basis, I would be running a 28x9" ET Drag that measure 27.2" in height. The added sidewall will certainly help out at the less-prepped tracks. Every track in West Texas can be considered "less-prepped". I wouldn't recommend a tall tire like that until you have enough gearing and converter, though. I'd personally upgrade converters first. Send your Vig back and have it restalled to a 3600; it will stall 4,200-4,300 behind your setup.

Feel free to give me a call at the shop or e-mail me if you have any questions.

Trevor

No one seemed to be able to hook up that night, but the car would launch pretty hard.
Thanks for all the help guys, how much would it cost to get the converter restalled?
Or would I be better off switching to a Yank TP4400, that's what I had planned for later.
I have the stock ends back on the car, but still need to tune it a little.
How much is the charge for dyno tuning at LG?
