Default considering a powerglide....opinions???

What do you guys think about running the powerglide tranny? The car will have a raceweight of ~3300 and make 550-600 rwhp and 650+ rwtq on spray for now. I have a good hookup on a glide but I'm also considering doing the standard TH400 swap too. Streetability is a non-issue for the most part also. Any thoughts?

I have to agree, A glide can hurt you more then help you. For where you are right now I would go with the 400.

You are making quite a bit of torque over a N/A combination. Depending on which gearset you run a glide might not be so bad. Remember that a glide has very light internals. I really don't know why the TH-400 is so popular with you guys. I would suggest that a TH-350 is a better choice if you choose a three speed. A TH-200 is a little faster, but would probably not handle the torque well. Again with a three speed gear choice is important.

Good Luck,

Daren

Glides are good trannies, but they cost more than a th400 built to the same level. You can drive a glide on the street it is just gonna take a little more gas pedal to get ya going (1.76 first gear) Your weight would be fine for a glide with the power you are making.

Glides are nice because the are Light, dont eat hardly any horsepower, much more controlable launches, lets the car settle back down in first gear before you need to shift to 2nd

I gained mph and et going from a 4l60 to glide with a 1.76 first gear and was making a lot less power NA then you and am at 3230lbs. This was NA in the mid 11s and on the gas it got even better. I say go for it.

I like the idea of the Glide in your car. As was already stated, they are very light. The one that I'm installing in my '84 Camaro is 79 lbs! (I have all of the lightweight goodies in it.) It doesn't get much lighter than that. I did a dyno test a couple of years ago with one of our low drag Glides. It only consumed 7 hp in high gear! Try it, you'll like it!

Kevin,

You keyed in on a big point that my local performance tranny builder convinced me of. A glide is very efficient!

It's a 3.70 rear gear, but i'm rolling on a "28 inch" tire. It's probably closer to 29 in actual size. I might be alittle off on the MPH, since I've got no speedo Was going by the speedo on the other guys with me.

It's close though
