Default Drag car project for spring...turbo?

I'll be picking up a 98 Z28 soon to use as my track car. I'm thinking about going with the STS turbo kit (upgraded) with the intent to eventually build a forged iron block motor to handle up to 20psi. Am I correct in assuming that I can use an upgraded (larger) turbo on the stock motor with the boost set around 8-10psi and when the income allows for an iron block motor just bump up the boost?

Can I get some opinions on this? Would the STS turbo kit work well on a drag strip only car? Or would I be better off going with a large N/A motor setup? What I like most about the STS is the ability to run some decent times when I first get the car and just dial up the boost as the motor gets built.

Any suggestions welcome...I want to do this right.

Thanks

IF you want a "Real" drag car and actually want to hit it w/ 20psi do yourself a favor and stay away from the STS.

You'll spend more trying to make the STS work when you do decide to turn it up that much than getting a decent race setup to start with.

I agree with Harlan. That setup you are looking into is perfect for a daily-driver, but I'd not look into that type of layout for a "drag car". If this Z28 is a true drag car, you won't need the A/C or heater, which gives you more room to put a custom turbo setup up front.

If your really going for an "all out drag car" Drop that LS1. You will spend twice the money in a LS1 that you would in a Gen II SBC or even a BBC

Y2KHawk: I've seen the vids of your car and that thing is SICK!

Nineball: How much does a custom setup run, and who are some manufacturers that you would recommend? Is the turbo technology kit any better of a choice?

Squat: I don't want an "all out drag car" but a car that sees 95% track time and 5% cruise nights at the local burger joint. I'll go as wild as I can before it's not streetable anymore. If over time I get more serious about racing I might consider doing a BBC conversion or something similar, but that would be far in the future. I'm willing to gut the interior, use a huge stall, TH400, 9in rear, etc. Just not ready yet for back halfing it/ditching the LS1.

You guys have made some great suggestions. Any more recommendations? I'm new to F-body's and this will by my first car dedicated to going fast in a straight line. I love my vette but it's just not great for drag racing. I'm sick of breaking expensive parts trying to drag race it...so any help you guys can give is appreciated.

Thanks

That is the best part about going to a turbo setup - you wont have to use a lumpy cam to make good power and can keep it streetable.

Spend 6k w/ PTK and just build the car/motor to handle it. They also make a thumper kit.

Well, a properly equipped all out BBC will run up to $70000 dollars. You will make almost equal power with an LS1 over a SBC. Just because the old stuff has been around awhile doesn't mean that race parts for them are cheap.

I dont know.. the new 572 with a Procharger on it, easy 1000 HP.. Of course you would need an upgraded rear end, tranny, and all that good stuff. Under $20,000.

Yes, but still, 1000 hp is quite attainable with an LSx based motor. Also, to be competitive with a big block, you'll need way more than 1000 hp.
