Default Posi vs. Spool

I am thinking of changing out the posi for a spool. I don’t think the posi is going to hold up to 6,000 rpm launches.
With the weight different of about 10 to 15 pound is their any ET benefit?

ive had good luck with my eaton....i have richmond 390s and the same posi as you do, and it has at least 250 passes on slicks with a heavy car all were 6000+ dumps......3 weeks ago i went to the drag strip on my 26x10 et drags and left on the limiter(6800)5 or 6 times..... held fine to a low 1.6 and drove it home, posi still works great always spins both wheels and is quiet(unlike my gears) im swapping my gears out for a set of 410s and a solid pinion spacer so we'll see how the posi likes 1.5x 60fts
to answer your question im not sure about the ET but people have gained hp on the dyno going to a spool although they drive like dog ****.....with hp gain there has to be something to gain at the track

I To Prefer The Posi. Spools On A Street Car Are Attrocious. Turn A Corner, Chirp Chirp Chirp, Hop Hop Hop. When They Do Blow Up At The Drag Strip (and Eventually They Will), It Usually Tears Everything Up Pretty Good.

i have a spool. drove my car 3000 miles last season with it, hardly ever noticed it, even when on a radial. only time it ever clunked was it tight turns in reverse. i have no idea why people make a big deal out of them, i really don't.

spool here and wish i'd done it long ago. it'll eat tires a TINY bit quicker but the fact it'll never break makes it all worth it

I had a posi for awhile with about 100 track passes until it left me on the starting line broke up. I went spool and havent had to many problems yet other than the driving charactorists that a spool has.

If it's a street/strip car, you should buy a Eaton posi w/800 lb springs and avoid the irritations of spool. Most cars at this site don't make enough power to require a spool.

I don't think it is a good idea to run a spool on the street. I have heard of people braking axle studs due to "over stressing the studs." I don't think anyone wants a wheel coiming off on the street or track. I actually saw a guy roll his car on the street due to the studs letting go.

As far as a track setup...a spool is the only way to go.

You just have to figure how much you will drive the car on the street and at the track. Very limited use of a spool on the steet, though risky, will probably work. But, if you put a spool in a daily driver, you are asking for trouble.

-Just my .02

Kurtomac- Is your car spinning out of the hole? I can't see a posi staying together with 6,800 RPM launches if it was dead hooking.

The Moser I have has the Eaton heavy duty with 800 pound springs in it.
I broke it once already with 315 Nitto’s (very little side wall) launching at 4,000 rpm. I was told that they have had a lot of spider gear issue lately and maybe I had some bad gears.
Now I am use Hoosier QTP pro 26x11.5x15 launching at 5,800 rpm for a mid 1.6 60’s. Only had the new set-up to the track once so far. With a little shock tuning I am hoping for low 1.6 to high 1.5.

I would like to get consistent mid 1.5 60’s on a DOT slick and be able to drive home.
I am considering trying a new set-up (4.56, spool, and 28” QTP’s)
But, as a daily driver I use 17x11 with 315x35x17 Nitto’s (very little side wall). Not sure how the spool will work with 315 on the street.
What do you think?

Kurtomac, Looks like you have had great luck with your posi!
Mine my have broke from the hard hit it takes from the short side wall tire of the 315 Nitto’s.
What tire are you using and what weight gear oil do you have in your rear?
