NHRA roll bar rev?
Last night at Moroso they were giving me **** about not having a roll bar. But last Jan I got extended tech to 11.5 under the new rules. They said that NHRA rev the rule back to 11.99 in June except if you were completely stock??
Is this BS or what??
Thank,
Bill

That is correct, it applies to only stock and unmodified vehicles. So if you car runs 11.80 and is stock, you do not need a roll bar. When you add mods to it and run 11.60 for example, you will need a roll bar. Modified cars need a roll bar still at 11.99, bone stock ones need a roll bar at 11.49.

That is total crap, moroso techs don't know what they are talking about, and believe me I had to show one guy how to read the rulebook about nitrous tech during the Citrus Nationals after he told me the OPPOSITE of what was required in the rulebook (which I called his bluff and made him get a rulebook and read it). I've run 2 NHRA tracks this year, and haven't been held to wearing my SFI jacket (which is required under 11.50) during the summer when my car doesn't run faster than 11.50 (but 11.60s are obviously faster than 11.99) and haven't gotten any crap. The rule has not been changed. The "stock" rules came out last June BEFORE NHRA changed the entire roll bar rule down to 11.49 and quicker starting this year. I'd call the division 2 tech director and clarify it with him (his phone # is in national dragster, or you should be able to get it off the division 2 website).Derek
It is not that it has been changed since then, but rather that is they way it was originally implemmented ... mainly for stock vehicle running in "stock" classes. Nothing has changed, just different tracks and people have interpretted differently or the way they wanted to. This is how it was explained to me by the NHRA officials and tech inspector here at Pomona.
When I read the rules, I interpreted them to be a stock bodied car with no modifications to the firewall. There is always a grey are that gives them a little wiggle room. Just like the stock and super stock racers having to have a "functioning altenator" on the car. They will have a spinning pulley on the altenator, but no internals in the altenator. So call your directors and have your rulebooks ready in case you need to argue your point, but ultimately, I think it will be at the discretion of the tech official on what he is going to put up with today. And better yet, there aren't any BONE STOCK cars running faster than 11.50 that any of us could afford to talk about anyway.

the only reason teh NHRA did the 11.50 rule was because of the bias ply tire class...ie stock looking 11.50-10.99 cars. down to the rims and red line tires...old time drag tires..
Acutually it was for the new muscle out there ie: cobras,vipers,z06 corvettes ect that
may be capable of running faster than 11.99 stock. They want to allow those folks to
play with out having to cut up the car.

The roll bar rules otherwise have held the same (at 10.99 and quicker, if the car has been back-halved or had firewall, frame and/or floor mods, a full CAGE is required, otherwise a 5-point roll bar is good in a coupe-style car (t-top included) from 11.49 to 10.00.
