Default My "custom" cold air intake

Did a little tuning on the car last weekend and found that my IATs were around 150* during normal city driving and not much better on the highway. The FIPK on a Z28, which has no way of bringing in cool air, sucks too much hot air. My options were either buying a functional hood like the Ultra Z, or somehow making a new intake to bring in cooler air.

Here is what I came up with. A 90* off the TB, then a couple 45* bends down to the fuse box area, then through the hole into the area where the AIR pump was. I used 3.5" diesel intake hose so I now have a true 90mm intake track. Due to the fog light hole and it's distance from the engine, this area should see much cooler temps. I haven't looked at the IATs yet, but they should be better. Only downside is I probably added 5lbs hose to the front of the car.

I drove around tonight and my IATs were around 95* on the highway and 105* in stop and go traffic. The outside temp is f-ing 86* right now. I definitely think this intake works but I'll put it to the real test tomorrow when its 100+ outside.

I like the idea of having pipe bent to use for the air intake, but who can do that? Any sponsors?
BadFnZ, your car looks amazing! One of my favorites on TECH! So clean and simple! Love that z28 hood.

Results are in. City driving saw temps from 109-114, getting up to 122 waiting a minute at a red light. Highway saw constant 105-107. Outside air temp is 103 right now with a heat index of 108. This means I saw a drop of about 20* on the highway and 30-40* in the city! I'm happy to see that at highway speeds my IATs are pretty much the same as the OAT, which means the cool air is getting to the filter. Another positive is that my IATs are measured at the MAF with the 85mm MAF, which means they're staying cool throughout the entire intake tube. I'm pretty pumped that this half-assed idea of mine actually works!

So where did you find all the elbows and bellows? If I cant find a place to bend me a tube, I will try your idea. I want mine to go down were the coolant overflow was though.

No, Home Depot has none of this. I had to get these bends from a heavy duty Diesel (18-wheeler) shop. You can use aluminum or steel piping if you want, but I think that would lead to more heat soak.

Power should be slightly increased due to the cooler IATs, but gas mileage who knows and who cares because I didn't buy this car for mpg purposes

Damn, wrong again. So I guess me and Tom the Roofer are the only ones who shop at Home Depot for our intakes.

we ran an lt1 elbow and lt1 slp style intake on my ls1 and lost 27 rwhp on the dyno!!
we took it off and replaced it with a 4 inch rubber house out of the maf for a straight shot! no airfilter , but this isnt my daily driver......

still trying to figure something out

the lower IATs will simply keep the vehicle from pulling timing, when the vehicle thinks it's getting too hot, it will want to burn conservatively. Shouldn't be running hard in this kind of heat anyway, high rpms and 100+ degree weather is just problems waiting to happen.

do you think cutting an opening under the filter on the metal radiator shroud the size of the filter would have brought cooler air up into the filter?
