Lightbulb Drag racing with a T56

Ok guys, finally going to run my goat at the track. Not going to be my first time drag racing at a track(been doing it for 15 years), but the first time with a manual. I have always had high stalled autos back in the day.

Burnout: How are you guys doing your burnout?? I have no line locks. I was thinking of dumping the clutch while in second gear and tap the brake while letting her smoke the dr's. Not sure if my shitty stock clutch will like that though.

Launching: I was going to just do the heal/toe thing and launch at 2k. I am thinking since I have a maggie, I won't have to rev her too high.

What do you guys think? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

No need to heel-and-toe, just start 'em spinning (in second gear) and quickly move your clutch foot onto the brake and press gently. Don't forget to shift into first at the start line - your clutch definitely won't like launching in second.

back up into the water box, don't pull the front tires through the water. Tach it up and drop the hammer in second gear while moving over and getting on the brake. I would then use 3000-3500 rpm and quickly slip the clutch out and see what that results in as far as sixty foot. Make adjustments from there.

I always do a 1st gear burn out to show a little mercy own my tranny and clutch. Plus my car won't do a 2nd gear burnout out. It doesn't matter how high I rev it or how wet I get the tires, the motor don't have enough power to keep them turning.

That's odd that you can't do a second gear burnout in the water box......

Please pull out of the waterbox before you heat the tires, so you dont make everybody mad for getting water everywhere..

What he said. I should change my wording, I don't mean actually in the water box, just outside the water. Usually the track official will set you up.

I don't think I can even launch this thing from 1200 rpm I just mounted my used bfg 255/50/16's with fbody wheels. Took them out for a little test drive on the street. I brought them down to 25psi and roasted them a little. I tried launching just from idle and smoked them in 1st,2nd And 3rd I know the track will be better than messing on the street but I just wanted to try them out.

I am thinking I am going to bring them down to 18psi and launch from idle.

I guess just experiement with rpm and see what works. That's why they call it test and tune!

You spin the tires faster relative to engine speed.

OK, like said before, back into the water box, do not drive through. Just dip the tires. Then pull out of the box. Now depending on the rear gear you have you will select either 1st (2.73s to 3.73s) or second (4.10s+). Now bring up the Rs to like 3500+ and dump it quickly moving your foot to the brake from the clutch (or get a Line Lock, so much easier). You don't need a john force style burny. Just till you see smoke, then let off the brake and pull up spinning a lttle and let off. Then stage.

Now the launch. This takes finesse. You will need to learn the car. Start off low and work up. With your power and tire I would not start higher than 3k. Track conditions will vary too so don't think you have it down one day and do the same the next day. Then add 500RPM each launch till the car spins or subtract 500 if you spin. Oh, and launch in 1st.

Another note: You will never hook on an unprepped street with your power and tires (well any tire for that matter), so don't compare your traction to street driving. The track is a whole nother surface. Good luck and have fun!

I don't think that's a good idea with radial tire...

Damn, a shitload of good responses!! I forgot to add that I went racing about a week ago. It was terrible. I ran 1/8th mile, because that's all there is here. My best pass was 8.20@91.2mph, that includes wheel hop, getting on/off the gas in second and then I missed third but quickly corrected it. I was having terrible wheelhop the whole night.

I am going to buy drag bags and play with that for a while. The tires were hooking pretty good but once they hooked and I left the prepped area they would either spin or go into wheel hop mode I raced at the Q. The take off is prepped pretty nice but once you leave the prepped area, it's a parking lot with some rubber on it, the track sucks period. I want to try Barona, THAT is a track!!

I remember on my second pass, my clutch stayed to the floor. The clutch was slipping the whole night as well. Still on the crappy stock clutch. I have an LS7 clutch in my garage waiting to be installed.

I also purchased ATE super blue brake fluid, i will be flushing out the crappy napa dot 4 stuff and adding the high temp ATE super blue.

That's not much going to help your drag-racing clutch issues...
