Default Why shortened rear ends?

I'm sure this question is very stupid, but why is it so common to have rear ends shortened? What's the advantage(s)?

.

Less weight, stronger axles, bigger tire, easier to get tires on & off when my size.

You can also get better fitment with common sized back spacing.

Wheel availability!!! There are few wheels out there with a 7 1/2" backspace and all but the Bogarts need to have the calipers ground down. With less backspace the caliper fits further toward the inside edge of the wheel. I could kick myself for not having my 9" shortened by 1 1/2" to 2" on each side.

My 12 bolt is narowed 3" per side...

I did it for the lip... and the "added" benefit of what mrdragster said..

Biggest benifit would be a wider choice of cooler cheaper wheels

I think it helps traction to have the wheels more UNDER the car instead of beside the car.

I've got 7 1/2" backspacing on my wheels, I think it's shortened like 3 inches all together and I have a 14X32.

I'm pretty sure I'll have to have it shortened if I want to get alumastar rears that aren't insanely priced.

Here's the winner!

Mrdragster nailed most of the reasons. Less weight, wider selection of wheels, caliper fitment, etc.

Thats it.
My Strange 12 bolt is shortened 2.5 inches on each side and it makes my 15x10 Weld Pro Stars with 5.5 BS look sick.
I haven't even finished the install yet, I just set a wheel on there and stare at it.
