Question for those who did it, is manual steering worth it?

I drive the car only on sunny sundays to and from shows. I also drag the car as much as I can!

I run skinnies on the front all the time, and want to race it more as it gets closer and closer to actualy resembling a drag car ...

SO, my questions is...since im running skinnies, is manual steering worth it? Or, since I do like to cruise from time to time...are the gains not justifiable?

If so, which unit? I saw flaming rivers kit, are there any others?

THANKS
Erik

I didnt have a problem driving on the street with the 275's up front or the skinnies on my old Formula. I have a BMR k-member with Pinto mounts and Flaming River rack(if I had to do it again Id get a pinto rack from Autozone and save big $)

I ditched the power steering, looped the stock lines, kept the stock rack, and drive it every day on the street with skinnies up front. It isn't THAT hard to drive, only really tight turns in parking spaces at the grocery store

I run a Madman kit in the Formy, turns very easy.

I run a stock looped rack in the Camaro, and it's fine except if you are for example parallel parking, then it can be a bitch. And this car is 200 or more lbs lighter than the Formy.

on a scale 1-10
10 the worst
1 stock

removed belt- 6 or a 7
looped lines- 3 or a 4

also you might want to take some caster out, but not much as it aids in drag racing to have more.

Still have PS, put a manual rack on it a while back and hated driving it, put the PS back on. I'll give up the 3hp and 12lbs in exchange for the ease of pulling the car in and out of the garage and into the trailer when you are jammed in the pits with no room.

I think I am in this section!
not enough dragging to justify the manual!

If you are looking for that last .05 or so its definitely worth doing the manual steering. Just didnt like it myself but others are fine with it, with the looped stock rack its '62 ford pickup with siezed kingpins bad IMO, pinto rack is tolerable. Plus I run like 8 degrees of positive caster, no biggie with the PS but a little tough with the manual rack.

Erik,

A manual rack in my opinion feels very good with skinnies. I prefer a more firm steering which to me give a better feel for the road instead of an overpowered marshmallow feel using ps with skinnies.

If your k-member is setup for the stock rack, give Madman a call as he can help you quickly adapt your setup to manual with his kit.

.

On my 2nd gens it saved a ton of weight. Well worth it to me, just bought a used manual unit. 2nd gens are frigging nose heavy. Besides, love the free workout, seriously, it wasn't bad for a 90% track only, trailer car.
