I may be wrong but I don't think NHRA accepts motorcycle [M] helmets since they are not necessarily fire retardant.

If you can go to some place and try some on. Also make sure they are NHRA approved. Get a helmet that fits snug and covers your chin.

I made it through a 70 mph head on collision with a truck on a motor cycle, so a helmet is pretty important, saved my life.

That helmet is M2005 and its on the list below.

http://www.nhra.com/contacts/tech_faq.html

Do I need a helmet, and if so, what kind?
A helmet is required for the driver of any car or truck running 13.99 seconds or quicker in the quarter mile, and for the rider of any motorcycle. Most drivers can use a helmet meeting SNELL K98, M2000, SA2000, M2005, or SA2005 specifications. Professional category and some alcohol burning vehicles require an SA rated helmet. It is important to note that the helmet rating must be designated on a tag INSIDE the helmet, or sewn to one of the helmet straps. The designation stenciled on the exterior of the helmet is insufficient for NHRA technical inspection. Also, some tracks require a helmet on ALL drivers, so check in advance.

I have a Simpson open face. They come with different size cheek pads to help get a good fit. The helmet you want will pass tech as long as it has the sticker. Most places just want to see you wearing it, and won't even look for the Snell date.

OK, thanks guys. I found this info also.It seem like the you do not need the SA type unless you want .Snell SA2000 - M2000. Our customerss have asked what the difference is between a Snell SA2000 and M2000 certification for a helmet. All Snell tests for these specifications include multiple impact tests at -20 degrees, 78 degrees (dry and wet) and 120 degrees. The Snell M2000 specification is the base for the specs. The SA2000 - used primarily for auto racing - adds not only the thicker shield, but also the use of flame retardant paint, trim, retention strap and interior. The Snell SA2000 helmet also meets an additional rollbar impact test.

.

Try to find a '05, get 5 more years of use, before being illegal. Just a point about open face to remember, if something comes loose, or comes into the car from the outside, closed face will help deflect it better. Most websites have a chart for measuring head. It's been 100% accurate for the 5-6 helmets I helped buddies order.
