I did some searching in here ~2 days ago on this exact subject, and some threads were mentioning about a 30 lb difference... ~60 lbs for chromemoly, ~90 lbs for steel. Others said ~20 lbs... So, 20-30 seems like a good number. For the cost difference, doesn't seem too bad. I'm going chromemoly / TIG.

My 8 point moly weighs about 75 pounds. However I have 3 additional bars in mine, specifically there are two that tie the main hoop to the rear bars and one that spans between the rear bars. I also have the bars that go behind the seats. It's pretty beefy! A full 14 point, including the underhood bars weighs in at 125lbs or so.

wolfe lists MS shipping weight as 80-85 lbs
and CM as 60-65 lbs
looks like a 20 lbs reduction

I'm really intersted in OSR 1's findings, as I'm about to do the same thing (replace a MS 6-point bar w/ a chromemoly cage).
It's nice to know I may not be adding any additional weight.

Fireball and weight reduction in the same post!
Never thought I'd see the day
Brian, I'll be interested to see how Tyson's stuff comes out... I'm going to need a cage sometime soon too.

well I've decided to go with the idea. I ordered a 8-point CM weld in bar from S&W Racecars (we only leave the hoop and cross bar unmodified). We have a nice pipebender so I'm going to bend my downbars to match my current bar. For the doorbars I'm going to a true 6-point (vs the 5-point I have now). Going to custom build a set of swingouts (similar to a design sold by chris alston for mild steel).
Once done I'll pull the hoop/downbars out as an assembly (the short downbars I have allow for this) and I'm going to basecoat/clearcoat the whole rollbar pewter which should be pretty durable I think
then we'll final weld the bar in the car and touch up at the bottom of the bars where the welds are
Once done, the bar should look something like this:

Re: how much lighter is a 6-pt Chromemoly cage vs Mild steel?
I was told the same thing by a freind of mine that has done many cages on older cars. He told me to go with the standard paintable tubing and not to get the chromoly because the welds do not bond to the metal flooring and will be very weak along with the chromoly cracking and busting loose from the welding being done to it. He plain and simply told me the added 20lbs from the standard cage was far better than a lightweight chromoly cage that will not hold up on a roll over. Is 20lbs. worth a life? Not mine!

2. Have to be careful not to put too much heat into the weld though because 4130 can become brittle and break...
