Default Found the limits of a stock 9 inch third member...

Well school has been rough this year and this was my second time out, first one was this spring when the track sucked. Anyways, track was hooking well and I wanted to see an 11.x out of the car, whether it happened or not was another story. The track kept hooking everytime I gave it more the track held. My second pass I dropped it from 3500 and it stuck but then bogged and came back down, only did a 1.89 because of it. My 3rd pass I side stepped it from about 42-4300, car dead hooked but didn't make it far, here is how I came home from the track and the results of my 9 inch... (It is a moser 9 inch with a spool, 35 spline axles, and 456 gears... The housing was a stock style iron casting... Guess i found the weak link

(Makes it easy to change the pinion)

.

That sucks. I would guess it was just a fluke thing. I've seen much faster & heavier cars last a long time with zero problems. Good luck getting it back on the road.

Thanks... I'm really haven't even gotten it off the trailor yet or looked under it... Kind of a lack of motivation! Oh well, guess I'll have to build it bigger and better next time. Your right tho, lots of heavier and much faster cars have done this no problem... Probably an impurity in the casing caused a stress fracture or something.

do you think it has anything to do with the TQ arm on the 3rd member? Has to a ton of force. I thought there where steel welded on tubed on the rear end houseing and a different bracket to bolt on the tq arm to convert to the other style.

Also would make gear changes easy.

I see it now that is what you have sorry.

the rear I bought off of tech was a stock N case, I had it opened up and the pilot pinion bearing "cup" had a crack in it, which meant the entire case did. the seller's car was running in the 11.x range.

I replaced it with a Strange PRO case.

Now all I need is to get rid of the eaton.

2FAST4U: my torque arm is mounted to the actual housing not the third member... So I can rule that out.

Nimitz87: Wish I would have noticed that myself Nimitz! Could have saved me some headaches... I really thought my driveshaft would have been the weak link. I'm still running a stocker steel with an adapter 1350 u joint... Guess I was wrong!!!

DanZ28: I guess so... Sucks having to spend more money yet on the rear... Should be back out next spring, I can't afford to get it on the road this year because I have one more semester of college to pay for!

Like I said I have seen it a few times in person. probably once every other year or so. If you guys watch any of the pinks shows I have seen two or three on it alone.

When you are beating on 40 year old thin cast parts things can happen. I will be using a through bolt Strange case We only use the stock housings for road racing

I broke 3 stock ford cases before I bought a strange piece. The pinion support is the problem, it lets the front of the pinion flex up and this puts it in a major bind. Mine was breaking the case in the back where the small pinion bearing is. If you don't catch it in time you will KABOOM the whole case like you did. I broke 2 in back to back weekends in my cam only 6 speed car. The stock case isn't the issue, it will live if you buy a good pinion support.
