Default Heads/FAST on stock cam?

Might be a silly question, but has anyone ever put on/dynoed a engine with some sort of headwork and intake but on the stock cam?

I've been slowly acquiring parts and building up my stash for a h/c/i, and so far I have the heads (ported 243s) and a FAST 102. The plan was to put this all in at the same time to save some headaches during install.

However, I recently developed a blown headgasket and heavy lifter tick on one of the banks, so I plan on pulling that head. But I was thinking, since I'm doing all this labor to take the heads off and back on (and replacing lifter(s)), might as well toss on the new heads I have laying around along with the intake. Would be silly to do all that work and put the stock heads back on especially if I'm going to be doing this again in the near future.

There is some good info in this thread. I like the idea of trying some of the AI 241 HCR heads with the stock cam and LS6 intake.

Shouldn't be an issue other than once you decide to add the cam your going to have to re-tune again.

Agreed. Leaning toward doing this with an LS6 cam and AI 243s after I have full bolt-ons. 420+ RWHP shouldn't be out of the question since mine is an M6. I'm surprised more people haven't tried this.

have always wanted to try a setup like this. Being a daily driver wanting to keep stock stall and stock idle. If it'll run 11's at close to 120mph like that i think it would be a great choice for DD guys.

This can be done and has been done. Mine is full weight (stock wheels and all) Stock ls6 heads, fast 78mm, ls6 cam every bolt on except ewp it ran 11.7 with a soft launch at 119.7 in 85 degree humid florida air about 3 months ago. I'd imagine a quality set of heads and a bit more compression it would pick up a little more.

I've considered just upgrading the heads and see how it goes, but it works so well with this setup I'm scared the return on investment just isn't there.

People seem to forget simple bolt on c5z's can make right around 400whp with simple dinosaur ls6 parts.

I think you would pick up some MPH with upgraded heads and you wouldn't lose any driveability which is an added bonus. Do you have an SSRA/FTRA/Chris1313? Throw one on there at the same time and you should see a significant improvement, especially up top. I want to do an LS6 build on mine after seeing the success others have had. No ram air setup.. in theory it should make more power but how much power can you expect an ls6 camshaft to make?

Thanks.. right now all it does is look good because my last pass it got stuck in 4th gear.
