Default Got torque? 370/AI/LS3 intake/4L60E

This is a engine we built in house for a local customer. He wanted a combination he could drive wherever he wanted whenever he wanted. At the same time he wanted a combo capable of running 6's in the 1/8th at the local drag strips.

The engine is a LQ4 based LS3 headed motor. It is only a 4.030" bore though unlike the massive 4.065" bore the factory LS3 engines come standard with from GM. The 4.065" bore really helps to improve airflow at low valve lift from the larger bore helping un-shroud the intake valve. We were still confident though that we could make respectable power with the smaller bore and smaller engine.

We didn't perform any labor on this customers car as he installed the engine and transmission himself. We did install a fuel pump for him though as the car ran out of fuel on one of the initial dyno sessions.

The engine was built with a 200 shot of nitrous in mind, with up to 250 shot being possible with the ring gap Jonathan selected. The customers transmission may not like that though so for now it's limited to N/A duty with the occasional 100-125 shot run through the engine.

We also have a pretty honest dyno with a SAE correction that I feel is accurate compared to some graphs I see. Uncorrected the car made 461rwhp/439rwtq.

Run down of the set-up:
-LQ4 block bored .030" over
-Wiseco 4.030" pistons
-Callies 6.125" Compstar rods
-GM 3.622" crank
-Advanced Induction CNC ported LS3 castings milled for 11.0:1 compression
-Tick Performance Custom 237/244 .62x"/.59x" 111lsa
-BTR Platinum .660" lift spring kit with tool steel retainers
-LS7 lifters
-Comp Cams 5/16" push rods .080" wall
-LS2 timing chain
-LS6 ported oil pump
-Factory un-ported LS3 intake manifold
-NW 102mm throttle body
-TSP 1x7/8" headers
-TSP ORX
-TSP True Duals
-Racetronix 255lph pump
-42 lb/hr injectors
-4L60E transmission
-Unknown 4200rpm stall
-10 bolt with 3.23's
-Nitrous Express Proton single stage nitrous kit with 10lb NX bottle

Dyno Graph on motor:

400rwtq@3400rpm from heads that, "can't make torque"?!?! The average power this combination makes is insane. It makes 460rwhp for 1200rpm and 400rwtq for 2600rpm!!!

With a 6 speed this would be 480/455+.

Should see some 6.90's on motor soon from this 3650lb. street car! On a 150 shot it should get interesting!

Very nice numbers. I don't understand how the smaller bore 4.030 vs. 4.065 helps low lift airflow though. My thinking is that the larger bore would pull more air throughout the lift cycle. Please explain.

I guess I worded it wrong. Of course the larger bore will increase low lift airflow. That is what I was referring to.

Looks good, should be fun. One question though, are "stool steel retainers" made out of really shitty steel hence the "stool"?

Lol. I saw that too. It's the nastiest of all steel retainers.

LOL!

You'll have to ask Brian "Stooley" on that one! Hahaha!

That 4200 stall is going to eat up some dyno numbers.

I was wrong about the uncorrected numbers guys.

Here is what it made uncorrected:

Here is what it made on a little 125 shot of nitrous:

This thing is a torque monster. It's going to run very well at the track with all the average power it makes.

Here is a really cool comparison. Here is our customers old LS1 vs. his new 370 we built. The LS1 had a small 22x/23x cam, ported heads and a LS6 intake. Everything else was the same other than the stall converter that did change.

Look at the under the curve gains!

Great results, Martin! Just goes to show what the right combination of parts can produce. The torque is indeed amazing...

It just goes to show as you said with the right combination of parts, great power can be realized.

Very nice for a big stalled auto!

That's a lot of overlap for that size motor. How does it drive? How much advance ground into the cam? My guess is 2 degrees of advance.

With a good tune it actually drives very well. Jonathan spends a lot of time (several days) tuning the engines we build for optimum driving manners.

The cam actually is ground with more advance than that which is why I feel the torque gains were so significant.

Even though it peaked out@5800 from the earlier ivc, the large port/valve combo really helps carry it up top.

Not to take away anything from the results, but that statement would only be true if it made that power unlocked. A locked small diameter torque converter will make more power at the wheels than a locked stock converter.

Haters gonna HATE! How many times do people have to disprove that "L92/LS3 heads don't make good low end power/torque" before the ls1tech mythbusters will confirm it?? Lol...nice work Martin!
